The midfielder played the full 90 minutes in this afternoon's win over Tranmere

Keith Southern edged ever closer to full fitness after taking part in the full 90 minutes of this afternoon’s development team win over Tranmere Rovers.

The former Blackpool midfielder featured in the first half of last week’s victory over Morecambe, but was delighted to get a full game under his belt today.

Goals from Tyler Forbes, Matty Blair and Josh Green sealed a comfortable win against an inexperienced Birkenhead outfit on the Fylde Coast.

Speaking after the game he said: “I thought we played very well albeit against a very inexperienced team. That doesn’t matter though as far as I’m concerned because it’s another run around and a chance to get back involved.

“Today was going to be a minimum 60 minutes for me but I was pleased with the 90 as it was a nice game to play in. I’m delighted really.

“I’m training really hard and I’m as fit now as I’ve ever been. I’ve done everything properly and my weight is correct, so if and when I’m needed I’m sure I’ll come in and do a good job.

“I’ve got to wait for an opportunity now, and when you’re given it then you have to take it. All I can do is keep my body right, keep fit, have the same enthusiasm and attitude as I’ve always had and I’m sure I’ll get a chance.

“Nobody wants to get an injury in pre-season because that’s your bread and butter, but that’s life and these things happen.

“We’ve got some good young lads coming through at the minute and Barry Nicholson’s doing a fantastic job with them.

“It’s the first time that the Club have had a development squad so it’s a learning curve for everyone.”
