Manager's thoughts before Wembley showdown with Burton Albion
Manager Graham Alexander says Fleetwood Town will achieve their goal this season if they win the Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off Final on Monday.
The Cod Army take on Burton Albion at Wembley Stadium looking to earn promotion to League One, the third tier of English football, for the first time in the club’s history.
“It’s the same goal we had at the start of the season – trying to win promotion,” said Alexander.
“We’ve got a great opportunity to do that and it will be a great challenge for us.
“It’s a tough game against a very good opponent, but we’ve been facing these challenges all season.”
The four meetings with Burton this season have seen a mixed bag of results which went largely in Albion’s favour, including two meetings in the FA Cup.
However, Town’s 4-2 win at the Pirelli Stadium gives Alexander the belief that they are more than capable of victory at Wembley on Monday.
“All four of the games against Burton have been competitive, so you know it’s two teams who deserve to be in the play-off final,” he said.
“I thought the mentality of the players when we won 4-2 at their ground was unbelievable because we were fully in control of the game.
“We know that, if we perform to our maximum, we can beat any team, so we have to focus on our own performance and make sure it’s at the highest level we can possibly get it to.’’
Fleetwood head into the final having kept a clean sheet in both legs of their semi-final 1-0 victory over York.
And Alexander feels a strong defence will allow Town to nullify Burton’s attackers.
“It gives you the basis to go on and win games, so we have to make sure we defend with the same intensity and intelligence that we have had in the last two games.
“Burton have players who can score goals, but we’ve got a very good attacking threat ourselves.”
Fleetwood Town supporters are reminded that they can purchase tickets on the day of the game at Wembley.
