Fleetwood complete deal for young centre back
Fleetwood Town have completed the signing of defender Tom Davies from FC United on an 18 month deal.
The 21-year-old will immediately re-join United on loan until the end of the season as they bid to win promotion from the Northern Premier League.
“The deal happened very quickly,” admitted the former Blackburn Rovers trainee. “I signed for FC United after finishing my university degree in Newcastle.
“It was a big step for me but this move is something else and I am over the moon to sign for Fleetwood Town.
“There was a bit of a murmur earlier on in the season that the move to Fleetwood could be a possibility.
“I kept my head down and worked hard at FC United. Last week the manager told me that there were some developments and the move could be a possibility.
“As soon as I heard the news, it sounds cliché but it is exactly where I wanted to be. I am happy I have signed the papers and I can’t wait to get started next season.”
Tom joined FC in the summer and has been a virtual ever present there this season having spent the previous two seasons playing in the Northern League for Team Northumbria, while at University in Newcastle.
Speaking about his recent acquisition, manager Graham Alexander said: “Tom is a player that our scouts have watched a few of times this season and he has the potential of breaking into the first team squad.
“He has been at University for three years and he has been playing for FC United this season. He has played really well.
“I wouldn’t say he is one for the future, it is down to him. He is in a similar boat to Matty Hughes if he shows the ability straight away.
“We thought at this stage of the season and the position that he plays it is a big ask for him to into the first team squad with no league experience.
“We thought it would be best for Tom to stay at United and continue to play games and come in and train with us whenever he can. He can then hit the ground running come pre-season.”
