Hughes welcomes home start

Midfielder eyeing new season injury return

Jeff Hughes believes Fleetwood Town have got the start they wanted after the 2014/15 Sky Bet League 1 fixture list was released this week.

After securing their sixth promotion in ten years in the Play-Off Final last month, Fleetwood will begin their first season in the third tier of English football with a home game against Crewe Alexandra.

Away trips to Notts County, Hughes’s former club, and Scunthorpe follow before Chesterfield, who lifted the League 2 title in front of Town last season, make the trip to Highbury.

Hughes, though, erred on the side of caution and maintained that no game is going to be easy over the course of the campaign, but believes Town have a good opportunity to establish themselves as a League 1 side early on.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Hughes said: “We have got a couple of tough away trips to Notts and Scunthorpe, but I suppose it is the start we wanted. It all depends on results.

“They (Notts) are looking to build this year. I have spoken to a couple of players and I am not sure how they are going to get on, but hopefully we beat them.

“There’s no-one there, though, that you would call easy, but we have got a good chance to establish ourselves early on.

“There are going to be a few changes and we will probably set up differently. It is a new season and a new start.

“We have got a good team around us already though. The team we have at the minute could hold their own, so if we can add to that, we will be able to establish ourselves in League 1.”

The Northern Ireland midfielder missed almost the entire second half of last season after sustaining a broken leg in the opening stages of the 2-0 victory over Hartlepool United in January, but revealed he is making good progress in his journey to regaining full fitness.

He added: “I am making really good progress now and hopefully I will be ready to join in with pre-season, get a good month or so under my belt, and be ready."
