Striker opens scoring

It was an ideal start to 2014 for the Cod Army and in particular 'Big' Jon Parkin. The striker played the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Accrington Stanley, bagging himself a goal and being named man of the match in the process.

Speaking after the game, Parkin insists the best team won. “We got ourselves into a good position when it was 2-0 and it was unfortunate that a little lapse in concentration gave Accrington a way back into the game. After conceding we managed to grab another goal and I think we thoroughly deserved the three points.”

Parkin opened the scoring with his 5th goal of the season and the 32 year old admitted he was relieved when Fleetwood's 3rd goal was scored. “There have been the few occasions where we haven't been able to make our dominance in games count and subsequently we've dropped points. There is a lot of belief within the squad but I was a lot calmer once Daniel (Carr) made it 3-1.”

The striker hasn't had a regular place in the starting eleven so far this season and after a man of the match performance, Parkin is hoping to be one of the first names on the team sheet for future games. He said: “I haven't played as many games as I would have hoped for but if I can keep scoring then hopefully I can retain my place in the side.”

Following the result, Fleetwood now sit in 7th place in the Sky Bet League 2 table and Town's number 9 is confident that the team move even further up the table. “We need to kick on from this result. I think if we can have a really good end to the season then there is no reason why we can't challenge for the automatic promotion places.”

Supporters are reminded there is no game this Saturday (4th January) - original Sky Bet League 2 visitors Plymouth Argyle are in FA Cup action. The fixture is now Tuesday 25th February.

The next home game is against Hartlepool on Saturday 18th January.
