Jamille Matt brace secures win
With the first leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy just one away we take a look at back at how the Cod Army have progressed through to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Final against Chesterfield.
League 1 side Tranmere Rovers were first up in the competition for Graham Alexander’s side at Prenton Park as they looked to avenge the defeat to AFC Wimbledon in their previous game.
It took 37 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock, Even Horwood scoring direct from a well taken free kick to put Rovers ahead at the break.
However frontman Jamille Matt was soon on hand after the restart to put Town back on level terms, taking advantage of a mistake in the Tranmere backline to level the score at 1-1.
And 20 minutes later Matt doubled his tally for the night to make the score 2-1, brilliantly making room for himself before slotting a ball past the beaten Fon Williams in front of the travelling Cod Army.
The hero on that night, Jamille Matt, has been sidelined for the past few months with an ankle injury and despite injury preventing him playing any part in the Northern Final, Matt is still proud of both his contribution and the teams progress as they now sit just two games away from Wembley.
“You look at how well we’ve done this season both in the league and in the JPT and it’s a great achievement for the club.
“It was my second start of the season and it was obviously good to get the two goals and they ended up being the winning goals so it’s something which I look back on and think I’ve played my part in the team getting to where they are at the minute.”
