Town put four past holders
Fleetwood Town completed a hat trick of League One scalps to reach the Northern semi-final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Carlisle United, winners in 2011, went the way of Tranmere Rovers and Crewe Alexander as Town turned on the style in front of a national audience watching on Sky Sports. David Ball’s third strike in successive games and a stunning Antoni Sarcevic goal gave Town a deserved 2-0 victory to extend their winning run to four games.
Antoni Sarcevic set up David Ball for the first goal and added a superb second to send the Cod Army safely through. The 21-year-old put in an all-action display - skipping past two defenders before crossing for Ball to fire in the first.
“I’ve picked it up, took two on and took it to the byline, and my first thought was to put it across,” he said. “David Ball was there, doing what he does best. He finished it nicely and it was a good first goal.”
Sarcevic then added his name to the score sheet with a well-executed half volley for the second, sending the ball over Greg Fleming to perfection from Gareth Evans’ raking pass.
