A last-gasp goal from Wanderers defender Anthony Stewart in the 89th minute dented Town’s play-off hopes in a game where it looked like Graham Alexander’s side had done enough to at least pick up a point.
After serving his one-match suspension and returning in mid-week against Cheltenham, Davies not only continued in goal, but was given the captains armband in the absence of defender Rob Atkinson, and Davies admits Town need to get back to playing the unpleasant side of football correctly in order to get back to winning ways.
“I think we did enough to win the game let alone take a point. If you don’t do the ugly side of football right, you get punished, and time and time again we are coming in and saying the same things that we are not picking up men at set pieces and competing all over the park.
“To be successful you have to do them things right. We all know we have got good players, but without that side of the game we know we are never going to be successful. There are some things that need addressing and we will do that in house.
“I actually thought we were the better team throughout. You can be the better team football wise, but if you are not out competing your opponent you are going to give them a chance. I thought we were the ones that became our downfall in the end because it was through our lack of competing, doing the basics right and picking up on set pieces that’s cost us.”
Davies says it was a great moment, and honour to be named skipper before the game on Saturday, but felt the moment was over shadowed by the defeat at Adams Park.
“Everyone knows how much I love the club and how much I have loved been here. To be given the armband by the gaffer was a great honour, but that has been over shadowed by a defeat.”
Fleetwood will now spend the upcoming week preparing for the visit of 4th placed Exeter City as they look to get back to winning ways, and the 25-year-old says he and his team-mates will plan and try and make a swift response when the Grecians come to Highbury.
“How many times are we going to have to say that throughout the season (getting the basics right)? It could be one defeat to many but we will go back to the drawing board and iron out the creases and hopefully respond next Saturday.
“We can’t keep coming out saying the same things because it isn’t fair on the fans, it’s not fair on the manager and it’s not fair on the chairman. It’s simple basic errors that are costing us and we need to iron them out, and iron them out quickly if we are going to save anything from our season.”
