Midfielder on target in both Highbury games
Antoni Sarcevic says he is delighted with the start he has made as a Fleetwood Town player after netting in the club’s last two games against League 1 opposition.
The goal scoring midfielder played 90 minutes in both the 4-0 victory against Preston North End and the 2-0 victory over Coventry City last night, where he scored the second goal.
Sarcevic said: “To finish the 90 minutes in both games, I am made up with that and obviously to score in both games is a bonus. I am happy with how things are going.”
Sarcevic had a number of other opportunities during both games to add to his tally of two goals in two games but his persistence in the opposition box was a pleasing aspect of the 21-year-old’s game.
“You just have to get yourself into opportunities and make sure you take them when they come and I had a few yesterday and I finally got my goal. It wouldn’t be the best one I have scored, but as long as it goes in the net I am happy. They all count.
“I should have done a bit better on some of the opportunities but I kept going and getting into the positions and that’s all that matters. I got a bit luck with the open goal and I just had to tap it in.”
Sarcevic admits on occasions Fleetwood’s play was frustrating for the fans, but he insists he was happy with the two performances but says the evidence of their tactics working was in the results.
“We knew they (Preston and Coventry) were both good passing sides. They didn’t create many chances and we were happy to see them with the ball in front of us and it may frustrate the crowd sometimes but as long as they are nowhere near the goal we are happy. As you can see last night we have probably had double the shots they have had and come out 2-0 winners.”
David Ball scored the first goal for Fleetwood last night and Sarcevic, who struck a partnership with the forward, was pleased that Ball managed to get his goal.
“We were speaking before the game to help each other out, he is a good player to play with and I am happy he got on the score sheet as well.”
Sarcevic has been nursing a knee injury he picked up in the opening pre-season match against Northwich Victoria, but he insists his knee, which has been strapped up as a precaution, is getting stronger ahead of the start of the new season next week.
“I have just been extra careful with it and kept it strapped up every game but it’s getting stronger and better now.”
Following two games against League 1 opponents, Fleetwood have scored six goals and conceded none and one of Town’s new signings this season says manager Graham Alexander has built a ‘complete squad’ ahead of the new season.
“I knew when I was coming with the signings he (Graham Alexander) made and the extra signings that have been made since I have been here and it just looks like a complete squad now. I can’t wait for the season to start.”
He added: “All the boys can’t wait now to get out of this pre-season mode and back to the season and hopefully we will do very well.”
