Roommates Nathan Pond and Jamille Matt took time out of their busy Austrian schedule to look ahead to Nathan’s testimonial. Simon Grayson brings his Preston North End side to Highbury on Saturday 20th July to celebrate the centre-backs 10 years’ service at Highbury.
Pond earned his Testimonial having joined Town early in 2003 and his debut was in the North West Counties League Division 1 against St Helens Town. The Preston-based player has since clocked-up over 300 appearances with 48 goals in each league Town has played in.
Roommate in Obertraun Matt paid tribute. “Ten years at a club is a fantastic achievement particularly when you look at where the club started. For Pondy to come through the ranks and keep stepping up with each promotion is a fantastic achievement. It’s unbelievable. He applies himself each day and I think he’ll just keep on going with Fleetwood.”
Pond was his usual unassuming self preferring instead to focus on the team’s pre-season work.
“I have a former teammates and a lot of family members coming along to the game. It’s not just about the testimonial. It’s a pre-season friendly against Preston North End and an opportunity to further prepare for the new season. It’s an opportunity for me to put in a good performance and cement my place in the team.
“I’m sure it will be a great day for the supporters and I’m looking forward to saying hello again after the close season. The fans have always supported me and I really feel part of the Cod Army.”
The centre-half, 28, said he is optimistic of making the teamsheet for the North End game.
“I hope to be selected! In fact, I think just might be in the team.”
