Manager upbeat about pre-season progress

11 July 2013

Graham Alexander says fitness levels are very good at this stage

Fleetwood Town manager Graham Alexander believes the experience his side are having in Austria is the ideal preparation for the new season.

Alexander hailed his player after reiterating the effort levels are admirable and believes his side are motivated for the new season. “We’ve been working extremely hard. We got up at 7am on our run before going to the gym and so forth. We’re still in pre-season, we’re still working hard. We have to work harder than our opponents to make sure we do what we want to do this year. The lads are in pain but when they get asked something, they give it all that they have got. It’s great to see.”

The manager also stated that the fitness levels are at a very good stage but despite a great win, Alexander admitted there is still room for improvement. “The fitness levels are very good yes. I think we have some very good footballers at the club. I feel we have a great mix of everything we need. But we still need to improve on a few things even though we won on Tuesday. I just feel we can become better in different scenarios but that’s probably me just being picky. We’re trying to get these boys to gel and be a really good team.”

The manager will see his former club Preston North End on the 20th July for Nathan Pond’s testimonial at Highbury but Alexander was quick to point out he is fully concentrating on pre-season. “I haven’t really been thinking about it to be honest, the focus is on training and the game on Friday because they are the priorities. Friday’s game is important, in the sense we take a step forward. We are improving the way we play, the way we defend and that’s all we are looking at. Then when we get back to England, we’ll start preparing for the Preston game.”
