Jamille Matt is fighting for a place in Graham Alexander’s starting line-up after his goal against Burton Albion on Saturday almost completed a comeback.

The striker came on as a second-half substitute for Fleetwood at Highbury and turned in Antoni Sarcevic’s cross to set up a grand finale at 3-2.

Matt has made three substitutes appearances so far this season, and knows he will have to be patient for his opportunity after the Cod Army’s positive start to the new campaign.

“Even if you’re a substitute you have to keep on fighting for a place in the team, and then rewards will come,” he said.

“We’re all fighting for a place in the team and the manager (Graham Alexander) knows he can call upon us if he needs to make a change.

“It’s a squad game and there will be times when changes to the first team need to be made, so you have to be ready to take your opportunity.

“It was good to score a goal (against Burton) but it’s the result that counts. We were disappointed to lose but we showed positive signs in the second half.

Town travel to Hartlepool United next in Sky Bet League 2 before another away match at AFC Wimbledon, and Matt revealed he is good condition ahead of the two journeys.
“I’m feeling fit and raring to go for the trip to Hartlepool next Saturday,” he added.

“It’s tough when you’re competing with players like David Ball, who has done a great job up front in the opening games, but you have to keep pushing one another to do better.”
