Both sides entered this stage of the Central League Cup following handsome wins in their last outings.

Town ran out 4-1 at Stoke City whilst Tranmere put five past Morecambe, again away from home. The promise of goals didn’t materialise as the weather took centre stage.  Cold, driving rain made the conditions difficult and it was Rovers who managed the only goal of the game on 22 minutes from youth player Oscar Durnin. The Tranmere side included 8 first team squad players and that was balanced with the same number of Fleetwood professionals. Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell, defender Conor McLaughlin, midfielder Gerard Kinsella and lively front man Alex Titchiner all played 90 minutes. Jon Parkin, Barry Nicholson and Jamie Milligan also took part in the game. First team coach Steve Macauley said the game was a useful exercise. “The result was obviously disappointing but it was an excellent run-out for quite a few lads who needed some game time.  This type of game is helpful for the first team lads and provides an opportunity for the younger players to learn from their experienced colleagues. “These games are vital as they provide a competitive edge against good opposition.” Town’s next outing in the competition is Wednesday 24th October when Morecambe visit Highbury. Kick-off is 2pm and supporters are welcome. Chris Maxwell (GK), Liam Wynn, Liam Fitzsimmons, Barry Nicholson (Jamie Allen, 45), Conor McLaughlin, James Cairns, Gerard Kinsella, Stephen Makinwa, Jon Parkin (Keno Deacon, 45), Jamie Milligan (Michael Smith, 82). Unused subs: Tom Peterson, Oliver Martin
