Defender Rob Edwards today signed a one-month loan deal with Fleetwood Town from Championship side Barnsley, and the 29-year-old was feeling positive as he put pen to paper for his new club.

"I'm delighted to be here," Edwards said. "When I spoke to the manager a couple of days ago about the prospect of this happening I was really excited, and couldn't wait to get it done and start playing some football. "I'm looking forward to Saturday's game [against Wycombe] too. I feel fit again now; I've had some injury troubles so far this season but I've put that behind me and I feel really good." After coming through the ranks at Aston Villa, Edwards can count both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Town's fellow Fylde Coast compatriots Blackpool amongst his former clubs, while he has also represented Wales at a senior level. "I've won 15 caps for Wales; the last one was quite a while ago now, unfortunately! It's something I've not ruled out again in the future, so we'll see what happens. "In terms of appearing consistently at a club I spent my best time at Wolves, I had four really good years there and really enjoyed it. "I moved onto Blackpool from Wolves and spent three good years at the club. I know a few of the lads that are already here as well from being quite local to the area, so it'll be nice to see a few familiar faces tomorrow on my first day and I'm looking forward to it.” Micky Mellon has hailed the signing of Rob Edwards, and is pleased to have brought in a “top-class” footballer to Fleetwood Town. “I’m delighted to get a player of that quality in. Rob’s somebody we have been aware of for a long time. We have waited for the opportunity, if he ever come available, that we would try and get him. “Obviously we have a problem at centre half with Steve (McNulty) being out for up to three to four weeks. “We only have Youl Mawene as a recognised centre half at the club at the minute; so it was important we had to move quickly to get a top class footballer in to the football club.” Edwards is set to make his Town debut this Saturday when Wycombe Wanderers travel to Highbury.  Tickets are available all next week by calling 01253 775080, through the website or visiting the club shop which is open Thursday to Friday 9am – 5pm (match day 9am to kick-off at 3pm). Hospitality is also available for home and away supporters by calling the club.
