Fleetwood Town have been successful in signing former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson on loan.

The midfielder joins the npower League 2 side and goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s FA Cup encounter with non-league Bromley at Highbury. Ferguson, 34, joins Fleetwood from Fylde coast neighbours Blackpool in what Town chairman Andy Pilley describes as a statement of intent for the newly-promoted club. “Barry is fantastic coup of the football club and a massive signing.  His footballing credentials are second to none and this is a huge, huge day for Fleetwood Town.” Ferguson joined Blackpool in summer 2011 from Premiership Birmingham City and has made over 50 appearances for the Seasiders as skipper.  The midfielder spent two seasons with  Blackburn Rovers in between two successful spells with Rangers. His time at Ibrox saw 82 appearances in European competitions and 45 caps for the national side.  He was awarded an MBE in 2006 for his services to football. Pilley went on to add: “Discussions have been held this week and Barry has really bought into the Highbury project, so much so he has taken a pay cut to drop into League 2. We are a hugely successful and progressive club and signing someone who has achieved so much in the game speaks volumes for our footballing aspirations.” Saturday’s kick-off with the Blue Square Bet South club is 3pm.  Tickets are available until kick-off from the club shop, calling 01253 775080 or online. The club shop is open until 5pm on Friday and from 9am on Saturday. Tickets for all areas of the ground are £10 adults, £5 concessions and £1 under 12’s. Some hospitality places also remain and details are available by calling 01253 775080. Image by PA
