Report: Under-18s get back to winning ways against Bolton

Fleetwood Town Under-18s were back to winning ways at the weekend as they managed to beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Poolfoot Farm on Saturday morning.

It was a game that Mark Yeates would have liked to have been more comfortable in due to the number of chances created by the young Cods throughout the game, but it was held to a one-goal game with Mikey Lane finding the back of the net seconds before the final whistle.

Forward Dom Richmond was the one to watch during the first half as he could have had a brace before the break, with his first chance coming just 60 seconds into the game when he fired just wide of the near post, and the next chance was a quickfire double, but both were deflected wide of the mark.

In the second half, the focus switched to Lane as Raff Cirino picked him out well in the midfield, with the forward turning his man in the midfield before driving towards goal – taking on two on the way – but his strike on goal, unluckily, hit the outside of the post, stopping what would have been one of the goals of the season.

The woodwork would deny Lane one again 11 minutes from time as substitute Kyle King found the forward in the final third but, after cutting in from the right, his effort clashed with the crossbar meaning the score would stay goalless at the time.

As the game was ending, it looked like it would have just been a frustrating morning for the young Cods, but Lane made sure that wasn’t the case. George Morrison played a brilliant through ball in the last minute of the game to Richmond on the right, who saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper, and the rebound fell perfectly for Lane, who tapped home from close range.

With that 1-0 win at home, it now leads into the final game of the season for our Under-18s as it will be the second game in a double-header against Bolton, this time it will take place at the Eddie Davies Training Ground on Saturday (kick-off TBC).

Town XI: Trialist (GK), Cirino, Whealan, Hoyle, Jones, Morrison, Namputu (King 46’), Glenfield, Richmond, Lane, Trialist.
