FLEETWOOD TOWN

As Fleetwood charge towards the conclusion of the season, they’re in mixed form having won once in their last four games, which was a 2-0 away win over Derby County. Before that though, they drew with Port Vale and lost to both Wycombe Wanderers and Cheltenham Town respectively.

Scott Brown’s side will be hoping to take the positives from their win on the road against play-off sitting Derby and add to that with a win over Lincoln. Carlos Mendes Gomes was on form in the game at Pride Park, scoring a great goal, which saw the Cods take the three points home from the East Midlands.

With not many games remaining, it is crucial for Fleetwood to continue picking up points to finish the season strong. Town will be aiming to put another positive run together between now and the end of the season, providing the team with optimism with the 2023/24 season not too far away.

LINCOLN CITY

Town’s opponents Lincoln sit just one point and two places below Brown’s men and have a similar record to Fleetwood in that they’ve seen one win in their last four matches. That, coming against Oxford United at the start of the month. So, Lincoln’s last win was four games ago, with Town’s coming last time out. Lincoln’s goal record hasn’t been the best of late, scoring just once in their last three games, however they do have a couple of strong attacking players.

Jack Diamond, striker Ben House and Teddy Bishop, who’s a midfielder who likes to get forward. Diamond has scored six goals this season, House with eight and Bishop will be looking for his seventh.

Fleetwood have been defensively sound for the most part this season, Brown’s side don’t tend to concede more than one a game but will be prepared to get tested by a Lincoln side hoping to get back to winning ways.

WHAT THE MANAGER HAD TO SAY REGARDING THE GAME

Fleetwood boss Brown spoke to local press ahead of the game with Lincoln and had this to say.

“We always want to fight and punch above our weight. It was a good result against Derby, and now we’ve got Lincoln at home, on a tight pitch.

“It will be hard, but we need to try and play our game on Saturday. Get the ball down and play exciting football and don’t go route one all the time.

“We need to be able to mix it up out there. I think the Derby game was the best away performance we’ve had this season, speaking to the chairman, he was delighted.

“Sometimes you can’t go gung-ho, and you’ve got to have options and I think the lads did that well against Derby.

“The lads want to go out against the top teams in this league and show they can compete. It’s a great club here at Fleetwood, which is full of people who want to consistently push above our weight that’s for sure.”

Report: Stockley stunner sees Town pick up back-to-back wins

Fleetwood Town came out on top in their 2-1 win over Lincoln City on Saturday, with Jayden Stockley converting the diving header with not long to go.

In a game between two of the league’s mid-table sides, Lincoln had the first chance when Matty Virtue hit the ball powerfully, but his effort wasn’t enough to test Jay Lynch in the second minute.

Less than two minutes later, Jack Marriott returned that with Town’s first effort on goal. He ran onto a loose ball and had a shot well saved at the near post by Imps goalkeeper Jordan Wright.

After a good few minutes of Fleetwood possession, which saw Town pass the ball around nicely, the ball fell to Lincoln forward Daniel Mandriou and he attempted to chip Lynch, but his effort sailed over the bar.

The game continued to prove quite a lively affair with both teams having half chances, but after a corner was swung in from Carlos Mendes Gomes, the ball took a faint touch off Jayden Stockley before finding its way into the net to see Fleetwood take the lead in the 17^th minute.

It looked as if the first half rounded out with a half chance from Town skipper Josh Vela, whose shot was deflected by an Imps defender and came to nothing. Following that, Lincoln’s Jack Diamond, who came on to replace the injured Lewis Montsma, had a weak shot which failed to test Lynch once more.

However, soon after a mix-up in the Lincoln box which saw Stockley take aim at Wright’s goal, the Imps got themselves back in the game with a finish from their captain Regan Poole.

Harry Boyes was the man responsible for having the first chance of the second half when he took aim from outside the box, but his bobbling effort was gathered by Lynch.

Trying to add to his goal from the first half, Stockley rose highest to head a great effort towards goal, but somehow Wright got in the way of it to keep Lincoln level.

With half an hour to play, Fleetwood were trying to turn the screw on Lincoln and put the game to bed. Stockley continued to cause the Imps some problems, he fired a shot narrowly over the bar from just outside the box.

Lincoln replied to that with an opportunity of their own when Max Sanders whipped a ball into the box, and Lincoln were close to going ahead when a header from Poole had to be saved.

Finally, after chance upon chance for Stockley, he got his second of the game. The Fleetwood number nine headed home from close range with 74 minutes on the clock.

Town substitute Phoenix Patterson tried his luck from just inside the box, with a drilled effort and he did win his side a corner – only for that to result in Lincoln regaining possession.

As the minutes ticked by, Town’s efforts turned to see out the game and see it out they did. Fleetwood took all three points as they get back-to-back wins.
