CHELTENHAM TOWN

Cheltenham aren’t on a great run of form having not won in four games, with a 2-1 win against Cambridge being their last three pointer. The Robins sit 19^th in the table, dropping down a few positions since losing to both Portsmouth and Derby respectively.

Before their win over Cambridge, their last win prior to that came back in 2022 against Shrewsbury. So, Cheltenham haven’t had the best time of it so far in the second half of the season.

Striker Alfie May - who it’s clear to see is Wade Elliott’s talisman - has scored nine times so far this season, his last goal coming in a 4-2 loss to Plymouth back in January. If the Robins can get him firing, he could be a threat to Fleetwood’s backline.

Another dangerman for Saturday’s hosts is midfielder James Olayinka, who has just one goal in the 21 league games he’s played so far this season, but is a constant chance creator in the Cheltenham team.

The league is that tight and it’s been shown with Town’s recent run of form that a few wins can push you up the table. Three points for Elliott’s side this weekend could be the start of just that.

FLEETWOOD TOWN

After a run of six games unbeaten, that came to an end of Town after a narrow 1-0 loss to Championship leaders Burnley in the FA Cup. In terms of the league, the Cods haven’t lost since the start of February, having a great run in the second month of 2023 picking up 13 points after four wins and a draw.

Three of those four wins were 1-0 victories at home, beating Peterborough, Cambridge, and Morecambe respectively. During this run they have performed very well, being strong defensively and playing some nice football going forward. In Fleetwood’s cup tie with Burnley, goalkeeper Jay Lynch played so well and was awarded the Man of the Match award by Emirates.

Alongside him, Brendan Wiredu, Harrison Holgate and before injury, Promise Omochere had been performing especially well. Scott Brown has assembled a great squad over the months he’s been at the club and the fruits of his labour are coming to the floor with results coming now after the team sometimes struggling to turn draws into wins in the first part of the season.

An away trip to struggling Cheltenham will be a good chance for Town to reset and continue their good run after a late loss in the cup to Burnley.

WHAT THE MANAGER HAD TO SAY REGARDING THE GAME & FA CUP RUN

Scott Brown spoke to local press after Wednesday’s FA Cup exit, saying he was ‘proud’ of the team of how they performed and what they have achieved so far this season.

“It was an absolutely unbelievable performance by the lads; it’s hard to coming here, especially when you get a man sent off.

“The lads defended well, putting their bodies on the line, we didn’t have much of the ball but our distribution when we had the ball, we tried to play but the press is extremely good.

“It’s not about me, it’s about them and how well they’ve done – their willingness and desire to go all the way.

“It’s got to be a confidence builder.”

Report: A disappointing afternoon as Town lose out to Cheltenham

It was a disappointing afternoon in Gloucestershire for Fleetwood Town as they fell to a 1-0 loss against Cheltenham Town at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

In a game that never really got going, it was a half-chance that led to the only goal of the game which happened just before the 60-minute mark. A clearance happened to fall into the path of Alfie May, who volleyed past Jay Lynch from inside the area.

It was a slow start to the game as Town looked to control the possession from the off, and two-half chances from the hosts summed up the action from the opening quarter-hour. The first was a free-kick by Aidan Keena, which was blocked, with May being stopped by Toto Nsiala soon after.

Town’s first chance came in the 20^th minute as the ball was played across the face of goal and was cleared, only to Scott Robertson who laid it off to Lewis Warrington who attempted to curl a shot into the bottom right, but the effort went wide of the mark.

There was a close call on the half-hour mark as Keena took a lofted bass down well and decided to try his luck on goal, but his shot was blocked and rebounded back to him. He then played it to Ryan Broom inside the area, who fired wide of Lynch’s far post.

The game seemed to spark into life just before the break as Liam Sercombe found the ball at his feet inside the Town box, and forced Lynch into a save before Carlos Mendes Gomes went down the other end and almost found a way through, but his effort went just wide of the far post.

That was it for the first period and the home side came out the blocks quickly at the start of the second as they forced Lynch into two early saves as he had to deny captain Sean Long at his near post before collecting Broom’s driven effort from range.

Not long after those chances, Fleetwood found their feet in the clash as Danny Andrew found the head of Nsiala from a corner, the shot going just wide of the left post. Mendes Gomes lined up another chance a minute later as he moved it onto his left foot and powered it over the bar.

The deadlock was broken by the home side just before the hour mark when a half-cleared effort from the Robins fell to May, who decided to volley it back towards goal, and that shot flew into the bottom right past Town’s number 13.

After some brave defending from Scott Brown’s men to keep the score at just one, Town looked like they may have worked a chance to level the score up 10 minutes before the end as Lynch’s long kick found substitute Jack Marriott on the edge of the Robins’ box, but his shot went wide of the mark.

As the game ground to a close, Town threw everything forward in search of the equaliser but couldn’t find a way through the Robins’ stern defensive line, which meant the day would have a disappointing end as Fleetwood headed home empty-handed.

Tickets now on sale for trip to Cheltenham

Fleetwood Town will make the trip to Cheltenham Town on Saturday 4 March for another Sky Bet League One clash.

The match at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium will be the second of three away matches for Scott Brown's side in the month of March, three days after Town take on Burnley at Turf Moor in the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round.
