FLEETWOOD TOWN

Since the opening day defeat at Port Vale, Town have won back-to-back games at Highbury, with the first being a 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the first home game of the new season. After going a goal behind, Scott Brown’s men came from behind to claim all three points, thanks to goals from Dan Batty and Joe Garner.

In midweek, the Cod Army beat Championship side Wigan Athletic in the First Round of the Carabao Cup. Ged Garner’s first half header was enough to knock out the Latics. Fleetwood Town will now face Premier League side, Everton at Highbury, with a date and kick-off time t to be confirmed. It will take place the W/C 22 August 2022.

MORECAMBE

The Shrimps have had a slow start to the 2022/23 season, with a draw on the opening day and then a defeat on the road to promotion hopefuls, Peterborough United. The first match – which was played at the Mazuma Stadium – was a tight contest against Shrewsbury, with both teams having chances, but failing to convert them into goals.

Morecambe’s second match against Posh saw Joe Ward and Ben Thompson score in the first half, with Hector Kyprianou bag his first of the season with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Derek Adams’ side did progress into Round Two of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. They played out a goalless draw with Championship side Stoke City but won 5-3 on penalties. Morecambe will now face Rotherham United on Tuesday 23 August.

LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE SIDES

Last time the two sides met, it was on Saturday 18 December and for those who remember, it was foggy for the whole 90 minutes at the Mazuma Stadium. With visibility low, it meant supporters struggled to see one end to the other, but the match ended goalless with Town edging the better chances in the match with four shots on target to Morecambe’s one.

ONE CURRENT PLAYER WHO HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH CLUBS

Ashley Hunter is a name that will be familiar to the Cod Army. The 26-year-old left Fleetwood in July 2020 to join Salford City on a permanent deal. He played 181 times for Fleetwood in the league, scoring 31 goals.

At Salford, Hunter made 74 league appearances, scoring just 8 goals in a two year spell at the Ammies. He joined Morecambe in July of this year, and has featured in both league fixtures and also the cup match against Stoke City.

SCOTT BROWN ON MORECAMBE

“It’s going to be a tough match; they got a great result in midweek against Stoke but we’ve played against Stoke so we know what a quality side they are - we are looking forward to the occasion. Morecambe are a side who have swapped and changed formations, but for me, it’s all about us and how we prepare, how we turn up on the day, and how we prepare ahead of the game.

“Cole [Stockton]’s a great player and it’s going to be tough to play against him at the weekend. We’ve watched a lot of him, especially in the last week as well building up to this game so, for us, it’s about us going forward and concentrating on ourselves. He scored almost half of their goals last season so, as I say, he’s a fantastic player.

“It’s a given that you work as hard as you can, especially in a derby match for 90 minutes. If we do that, hopefully, it all pays off with what we’ve done in training and how the lads have worked. I know Derek Adams. He had a wonderful career and is doing a great job at Morecambe but for me, it’s all about us and how we prepare.”

Report: Town and Morecambe share the spoils in Lancashire

13 August 2022

Sponsored by

Fleetwood Town played out a 1-1 draw with fellow Lancashire side Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Town did brilliantly to come back into the game after Arthur Gnahoua opened the scoring in the first half with his strike from the left as Danny Andrew showed his quality as he struck the ball into the top right corner of Morecambe’s goal with his weak foot.

Even though Town created the majority of the chances throughout the fixture, it was the home side who netted the only goal of the game through winger Arthur Gnahoua, who drove down the left before firing past Jay Lynch between the Fleetwood sticks.

It was the hosts who started the game the better side as they managed to create multiple chances in the opening 10 minutes through Jake Taylor, who fired over, and former-Cod Ash Hunter, whose curled effort went high and wide of the target.

However, it didn’t take long for Town to find their feet as the chances started flowing soon after. Ged Garner tried his luck from 20-yards 10 minutes in, which was dragged wide before Dan Batty turned his man well inside the box, but had his effort blocked.

It was all Fleetwood at this point as the side worked corner after corner, with one of them almost resulting in the first goal of the game, as Toto Nsiala rose highest in the box to get on the end of the set-piece but had his effort cleared off the line.

On the half-hour mark, Town should have had a penalty after a blatant handball from Liam Gibson inside the home side’s box. He stopped Harrison Holgate from heading the ball after blocking the ball with his outstretched arm.

After 32 minutes, the deadlock was broken and it was the home side that managed it. A loose pass from Callum Morton was picked off and played out wide to Gnahoua, who showed his pace before firing across Lynch and into the bottom corner.

Town then pressed to level up the scoreline with chances from Josh Earl and Lane being being blocked, but that allowed the hosts to have shots of their own. One of them came from Hunter, who latched onto a poor pass at the back, but saw his shot hit the post.

Lynch had a great end to the half as he managed to pull off a brilliant double save in added time before the break, first denying Gnahoua from the edge of the box and then a diving header from a couple of yards out from Taylor.

It was a good start to the second period for the Cods as multiple chances were created early on as Shaun Rooney fired high and wide after good skill from Lane, before the Northern Irishman had a chance of his own, which also went off target.

With the introduction of both Promise Omochere, who has just returned to the side after an injury – and Joe Garner, the attacks continued to flow with Andrew striking a free-kick on target from 25-yards, but Ripley was there to save the shot.

It was end-to-end from that point on as both sides were able to create meaningful chances. Town’s came from substitute Cian Hayes as his goal bound effort had to be blocked by a sliding Ryan Delaney, with Morcambe’s coming via Dylan Connolly, which was brilliantly stopped by Lynch.

With not long left in the game, it was made level after a brilliant weak-footed strike from Andrew. Inside a clustered home penalty area, the ball seemed to gravitate to the full-back who swung his right boot at the ball, with his effort finding the top right corner.

Morecambe XI: Ripley (GK), Love (C), Melbourne, Gibson (McLoughlin 85’), Rawson, Delaney, Taylor (Bedeau 87’), Fane, Hunter (Watts 85’), Gnahoua (Connolly 77’), Obika.

Unused sub: Smith (GK), Cooney, O’Connor.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Andrew, Wiredu (Omochere 60’), Vela (C), Morton (Hayes 46’), Lane, G.Garner (J.Garner 60’), Nsiala, Batty (Macadam 72’), Rooney (Johnston 72’), Earl.

Unused subs: Cairns (GK), Holgate.
