FLEETWOOD TOWN

The Cods head into the Lancashire Derby on the back of two back-to-back defeats, both finishing 2-1 respectively to Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers. With Town now sat 15th in Sky Bet League One on 50 points, it has been a much better season than the last, but the players and coaching staff are looking to finish the season off in style.

Scott Brown's side last won on the road at Derby on Saturday 18 Match 2023, and the head coach will be looking for a similar performance from his team when the make the short trip to Accrington. On that day, goals from Jayden Stockley - which eventually went down as an own goal, and one from Carlos Mendes Gomes helped the Cods pick up three points at Pride Park.

Town have won seven matches away from home all season, and with three away fixture left of the 2022/23 season, can the lads make it ten away wins for the campaign?

Promise Omochere and Scott Robertson made a cameo appearance on Easter Monday after time on the sideline, with the duo pushing for a starting place for the Lancashire Derby match. Harvey Macadam is out due to picking up a hamstring injury in the Bristol Rovers match, but there are no new injury concerns for Fleetwood Town's boss.

ACCRINGTON STANLEY

Accrington currently find themselves 21st in Sky Bet League One, having won only nine of their 40 games played in the campaign so far. With 38 points collected, they're only two points behind Oxford United - who find themselves dangerously close to the drop zone.

John Coleman's side have won two of their last ten matches, with the last three points coming against Port Vale on Good Friday at the Wham Stadium. With a help from Vale player Jack Satevens, Stanley got the ball rolling in the 31st minute, with former Town player Harvey Rodgers scoring five minutes before half-time.

A penalty from Aaron Pressley in the 68th minute sealed the victory for Stanley, giving them a glimmer of hope and closing the gap on those above them in the league table. They beat fellow strugglers Forest Green Rovers back in March, with their last three victories coming on home soil - a warning for the Cod Army?

Striker Tommy Leigh will be the one player to watch on Saturday. The forward tops the goal scoring charts for the hosts, but with no goal in his last few matches, will he be able to influence the scoreline? Or will the forward be able to assist his teammates during the Lancashire Derby.

Report: Five-star Fleetwood do the double over Accrington

Fleetwood Town got back to winning ways in some fashion on Saturday afternoon as they put five past Accrington Stanley in their Lancashire derby at the Wham Stadium.

It was a day to remember as forward Jack Marriott secured his first hat-trick in red, with two goals coming in the first half and his last coming being added seconds before the end. Both Promise Omochere and Phoenix Patterson also jumped on the score sheet in an emphatic win in front of the travelling Cods.

It was a quick start from the Cods as they looked to break the deadlock straight from kick-off, with the first chance of the game coming in the second minute as captain Josh Vela played a ball over the top for Omochere, but his right-footed volley went over Lukas Jensen’s bar.

Four minutes later, Jayden Stockley thought he did enough to open the scoring as he tried to skilfully finish Brendan Wiredu’s run down the right, but the chance went wide of the mark. Town didn’t have to wait long though as Marriott latched onto a long ball before volleying past Jensen soon after.

It was more early domination from Fleetwood as Phoenix Patterson showed his skills to Michael Nottingham - who turned 36 yesterday – in the 14^th minute, beat him and unfortunately saw his effort on goal deflect out for a corner.

The home side then started to build their way into the game around the 20-minute mark as Aaron Pressley nodded a corner just past the far post before Liam Coyle’s eyes lit up 20 yards out, but his drilled effort flew wide of the mark for the hosts.

Town would have felt that they should have added a second a half-hour in as Marriott saw his effort, assisted by Carl Johnston, deflect just wide of the near post and, from the resulting corner, Stockley had his header, unluckily, come off the top of the crossbar and go out.

It was two 35 minutes in as Marriott did brilliantly to keep the ball in on the left wing, then outmuscle Tommy Leigh midway through the half. With Stockley being an option, he decided to go himself and it turned out to be a good decision as he powered his strike into the bottom right.

The last bit of key action in the first half was a big one for the hosts as Coyle saw red in added time, lashing out a horror tackle on Johnston just outside Town’s area, going over the ball, leaving the referee no choice but to send off the number six.

Marriott wasn’t done with his brace as, after the break, he stormed through on goal at the hour-mark, one-on-one, but saw his shot deflect back off the post. Luckily, Stockley was there to play the rebound back across the goal to Omochere who slotted home from close range to make it 3-0.

Accrington didn’t bow down to the pressure though as they pulled their way back into the game as a scrappy goal from Nottingham put the deficit back to just two, and Leigh fired an effort from the edge of the box with 10 minutes to go, which found the bottom left corner of the goal.

The ending was made for Hollywood as both Patterson and Marriott found the back of the net in added time to make it a much more comfortable end to the day as Scott Brown’s side walked away from East Lancashire with all three points and smiles on their faces!

Kids can watch Fleetwood Town in action against Accrington Stanley for just £5 this weekend!

The young Cods who are wanting to get their football fix this weekend can watch the Sky Bet League One encounter against John Coleman's Stanley for ONLY £5 at the Wham Stadium.

With the FANtastic Smile & Sign event at Poolfoot Farm on Thursday afternoon - where plenty of the young fans turned out to see their heroes - we know you're out there, so why not get a ticket and watch the Cod Army live at 3pm on Saturday.

If you're a paying adult and have already booked your match ticket and coach travel, for an extra £10, you can take your little one (Under-12) with you to the game and to also travel with you on the official supporters coach and to cheer Scott Brown's side on from the stands.
