FLEETWOOD TOWN

Town are looking to build on their previous result, which ended up a goalless draw against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Interim head coach Simon Wiles picked up his first point against the Latics and was unlucky to not have taken all three. It was a game that was dominated by Fleetwood chances but with no reward for the hard work and persistence shown by the Cod Army the points were shared.

In the game before that, the Cod Army lots out to MK Dons at Stadium MK. The hosts started the game the stronger with Joe Mason scoring a hat-trick in the opening 30 minutes. Town seemed to grow into the game after the half-time break, creating multiple chances, with substitute Sam Finley managing to find the net from 25-yards late on.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN

Northampton are heading into Tuesday night’s league game on the back of a 2-1 loss to Lincoln City at Sincil Park.

The game was mostly in the middle of the park until the 75th minute when Conor McGrandles found the back of the net to give the Imps the lead, with Anthony Scully adding to their lead nine minutes later. Danny Rose scored with seconds to go but Keith Curle’s side left it too late to forge a comeback.

Before that, they were in Papa John’s Trophy action as they hosted MK Dons in the third round of the competition. They lost 2-0 on the night with Stephen Walker bagging a brace, with a goal either side of the half.

ONE TO WATCH: DANNY ROSE

One player to watch in Town’s league clash against Northampton is Danny Rose. The 27-year-old is the top scorer for the Cobblers this season as he has found the net on five different goals, with four coming in the league and one in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Rose started his career as a trainee at Barnsley in 2011 and after making 18 appearances for the Tykes, he made the move to Bury after a successful loan spell. He played in over 70 games in two seasons, finding the net 15 times whilst at Gigg Lane.

In May 2016, the forward signed for Mansfield Town and scored on his debut in a 3-2 win over Newport County. He would go on to spend four seasons at Field Mill and was a regular throughout his time there.

After being linked to a move away from the Stags, he joined Northampton in October 2020 and since then, he has featured in 20 games and has scored five goals.

Report: Fleetwood play out goalless draw against Northampton

26 January 2021

Fleetwood Town played out a 0-0 draw against Northampton Town at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Fleetwood created chances throughout the game and looked the most likely to break the deadlock but couldn’t seem to find a way past Jonathan Mitchell between the sticks in the Cobblers goal.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts as Janoi Donacien worked a yard of space on the right and played a deep ball into the box where Josh Morris clashed heads with Peter Kioso, with the latter needing treatment after the come together.

The game was end-to-end for the next ten minutes before Harvey Saunders barrelled through the Northampton midfield 14 minutes in. He pressed the backline and decided to try his luck from range, but his shot was deflected wide of the target.

The Cobblers forged a chance 20 minutes in as Joseph Mills spotted an opportunity to try to catch Alex Cairns out, but his effort went well over the bar.

Town continued to press and worked multiple chances with Callum Camps. The first was an acrobatic effort, as he latched onto a Paddy Madden cross, which went over the bar. The second was a free-kick from 30-yards that had to be tipped over Jonathan Mitchell.

After the break, it took a corner for Fleetwood to work a chance as the ball dropped at the back of the box, to the feet of Callum Connolly, whose deflected strike flew just past the near post.

The visitors had a gilt-edge chance 10 minutes into the second half as Kioso lobbed a cross into a packed Fleetwood box, finding Danny Rose, but his header went wide of the target.

Simon Wiles’ side almost found a way through as Madden received the ball in the middle of the box, chested the ball down but volleyed just over the bar. Just after, Camps played a tricky pass to Saunders on the edge of the Northampton box, and after a touch to get the ball out of his feet, he struck the ball over.

With 13 minutes to go, Northampton caught Town out on the counter-attack with substitute Ryan Watson picking the ball up 25-yards out, moved the ball on to his left foot before striking just wide.

Town XI: Cairns (GK), Andrew, Connolly, Duffy (McKay 70’), Camps (Vassell 70’), Mulgrew (Holgate 63’), Madden (C), Saunders, Donacien, Finley (J.Morris 74’).

Subs not used: Coleman (GK), Rydel, S.Morris.

Cobblers XI: Mitchell (GK), Bolger (C), Horsfall, Hoskins, Kioso, McWilliams, B.Morris, Mills (Korboa 69’), Edmonson (Watson 73’), Jones, Rose (Ashley-Seal 89').

Subs not used: Berry (GK), Harriman, Missilou, Chukwuemeka.
