Fleetwood Town welcome Premier League side Burnley to Highbury on Tuesday night, and we have all you need to know in our preview.

Fixture: Fleetwood Town v Burnley

Competition: Pre-season friendly

Date: Tuesday 23rd July 2019

Kick-off: 7:45pm

Venue: Highbury Stadium, Park Avenue, Fleetwood, FY7 6TX

FLEETWOOD TOWN

Fleetwood Town have had an action-packed last few weeks – with pre-season well underway. Town’s players first returned to training at Poolfoot Farm in late June and started the grind all over again.

The first full match they competed in was against National League side Wrexham AFC at Poolfoot, and they walked away 1-0 winners – thanks to a Michael Fowler goal.

Town have made six new signings over the summer, bringing in both new and familiar faces. Danny Andrew and Josh Morris entered the club first and were followed by Paul Coutts, Lewie Coyle, and Jordan Rossiter. Fans favourite Harry Souttar rejoined the club last week on a season-long loan from Championship side Stoke City.

Barton’s side have already played matches against Millwall, Port Vale and Carlisle United.

BURNLEY

The Clarets have had a great pre-season themselves with new signings coming through the door, as well as performing well on the pitch in the matches they’ve played.

On Saturday, Burnley travelled to Port Vale and came away 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Chris Wood, Matej Vydra and Robbie Brady. On the same day, another squad travelled to Crewe Alexandra – where Dyche’s side lost 1-0 at the Reds.

Burnley have Fleetwood to face, and then a trip to North West side Wigan Athletic before two home friendlies against Nice and Parma.

They have brought back forward Jay Rodrigues (29) for £10 million, and returns after he originally left the club in 2012 when he made the move to Southampton.

ONE TO WATCH: CHRIS WOOD

Chris Wood is Burnley’s dangerman when the two sides meet, and the forward has already scored five goals in three appearances in the 2019/20 pre-season friendlies.

The New Zealand international has played 62 games for the Clarets and scored 20 times since joining the club in 2017, and has made over 50 appearances for his national side.

Wood started off his career at Cambridge FC in 2006, and after a few moves, it was a trip to the Midlands where he signed for West Bromwich Albion in 2009 – and where he spent the next four years.

With loan spells at Barnsley, Brighton, Bristol and Millwall, it was time to move for the 27-year-old – and that move was to former Premier League champions, Leicester City. Leeds United followed and then Burnley in 2017 – where he has been a fans favourite since arriving at Turf Moor.

Report: Cod Army put up good fight in Burnley pre-season defeat

23 July 2019

Fleetwood Town can feel proud despite falling to a 2-0 pre-season defeat against Premier League side Burnley on Tuesday evening.

On a sunny evening on the Fylde Coast, it was the away side that took the lead just before the break through Ali Kioki. The ball bounced around Town’s penalty area following a shot, with the forward curling it in from close range.

You’d have to say Fleetwood started off the better side, they looked to get the ball on the floor, and on the odd occasions beat Burnley with the ball around the full-back, and with Wes Burns’ pace, it worked with a lot of affect.

Through that ball over the top, it was Burns who was the provider for Town’s latest signing Harry Souttar. The Stoke loanee rose the highest in the Clarets’ penalty area, guiding his header goal wards, but not trouble former England goalkeeper, Joe Hart.

Burns was lively and Burnley had their captain Tarkowski to thank for getting in the way of the Welshman’s close range effort. The only thing missing for the Cod Army was that opening goal.

Sean Dyche’s side nearly took the lead through Kioki, but the youngsters’ effort from a few yards out was skied over the crossbar. It was a huge let off Joey Barton and his men.

Burnley got the opening goal of the game a minute before half-time through Kioki. With a hint off offside, the forward played to the whistle and took his goal well inside the 18-yard box.

The visitors made nine changes at the break, with only Hart and Kevin Long surviving from the team that started the match at Highbury.

Town had the first opportunity of the second-half through Conor McAleny and when the lone striker made a run into the box, it was Lewie Coyle who picked him out with a lovely cross from the right wing. Another great chance for Fleetwood.

Despite the threats from Fleetwood, it was substitute Wood who scored in front of the travelling away fans from two yards out. A nice easy finish for the New Zealand international – who has now scored six goals in four games this pre-season.

Fleetwood did have the ball in the back of the net thanks to Josh Morris, but as the former Scunthorpe man turned around to celebrate, the lineman’s flag was up. It was great attacking build-up play by the home side.

Harvey Saunders had a great opportunity to score as a substitute – just like Woods earlier in the half – and this side it was a cross from the far side that was whipped into the six-yard box, only for Saunders to aim his header wide.

Souttar should have pulled one back for the Cod Army after Ash Hunter curled in a wicked ball into the box. With Hart coming off his goal line, it made the angle tight for the Australian international – who will probably look back at a missed opportunity to score.

Fleetwood ended the game well against Burnley, and with the chances they created, there will be plenty of positives looking ahead to the next match on Friday when Championship side Preston North End visit Highbury.
