Report: Madden and Dempsey goals see Town end Hungary trip with win

Second win of the tour for Joey Barton's side on Saturday afternoon

14 July 2018

Fleetwood Town secured their fourth straight pre-season win after beating Zalaegerszegi TE 2-0 in Hungary on Saturday afternoon.

Second half goals from Paddy Madden and Kyle Dempsey saw Joey Barton's side finish their pre-season training camp in Hungary on a high.

The game also saw over 50 fans supporting the Cod Army, after travelling to Europe on the club’s ever popular pre-season supporters’ trip.

Town started well with Jason Holt and Harrison Biggins linking up in midfield, with the latter having a shot just over the bar inside ten minutes.

Fleetwood were back on the attack just five minutes later as Ash Hunter plucked the ball out of the air, drove into the Zalaegerszegi half and tried his luck from 30 yards – his chip went just over the crossbar.

The first chance for Zalaegerszegi came in the 25th minute as Mate Kiss whipped in a corner from the left but Ashley Eastham defended the set-piece well, forcing the attacked to head the ball wide of the target.

Town countered straight away as Biggins played in Hunter on the edge of the opposition area, he moved the ball onto his right foot and Illes Zoldesi made a decent save.

Two minutes later, Town’s best chance of the game came. The Hungarians failed to clear a corner, which fell to Cian Bolger who stood up a cross to the back post, with Madden heading on target but the keeper saved well. All square at the break.

Just after the half-time break, the deadlock was broken as substitute Bobby Grant drove a cross in towards Madden, who calmly volleyed the ball into the back of the net, leaving Zoldesi nothing to do but watch.

Fleetwood found themselves two goals to the good ten minutes later as Dempsey moved the ball onto his right foot and tried his luck from range, which ended up in the back of the net! A stunning goal.

The final chance of the game came from another substitute Gethin Jones as he crossed the ball into the box towards Wes Burns but his header went just wide of the near post.

Town end their pre-season training camp in Budapest with victory – a great week for Joey Barton’s side, with the Sky Bet League One season just three weeks away.

Town XI: Cairns (Urwin); Coyle (Jones), Bolger (Holgate), Eastham (Baines), Spurr (Maguire); Sheron (Sowerby), Biggins (Garner), Holt (Dempsey), McAleny (Grant), Madden (Nadesan), Hunter (Burns).
