Development Squad narrowly lose out to Bolton in Central League opener

19 August 2022

Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad lost 1-0 to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday afternoon in the Central League opener at Poolfoot Farm.

Stephen Crainey’s side narrowly lost out in midweek on home soil, with Bolton forward Conor Carty scoring the only goal of the match late in the second half.

Town started off bright in the game and had a great chance to go ahead through Danny Edwards. After everyone touched the ball from playing out from the back, Kyle White played a ball through the back line to D. Edwards - whose shot just went wide of the near post.

Moment later, Dylan Boyle started a counter-attack 20-yards from our goal. D. Edwards fed the ball to Will Russ - who then picked out Max McMillan who somehow missed a great chance.

After the break, Lloyd Isgrove made a fantastic run down the right wing, and with his low cross causing trouble in the box, the Bolton forward forced a good save from Tom Donaghy.

McMillan made the Wanderers keeper work after the young forward plucked the ball out the sky from a Sam Bird’s cross. He tried his luck from the edge of the box, but couldn't find the netting with his shot.

Bolton’s goal came from the left-hand side as Carty managed to get the right side of Will Johnson before picking out the bottom right corner.

The hosts did continue to knock on the visitors door, but couldn’t capitalise on the chances that fell their way. The young Cods will now play Blackpool in their next Central League game on Tuesday 30 August. A kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.

Town XI: Donaghy, Bird, Johnson, Teale, J.Edwards (Leggett 83’), Boyle, Thompson, White (Glenfield 83’), D.Edwards (Raffie 76’), McMillan, Russ.
