Thoughts from the dugout.....
15/08/08 18:00

Tuesday night was a lesson in what this league is all about.  Farsley were on top of their game and we were up against some good players. We must learn to adapt quickly and respond in the right way. The same players will be used tomorrow, but I’ve not decided the starting line-up. Kieran Walmsley picked up a slight hamstring strain on Tuesday night, so Farrell Kilbane will come in to replace him.

Sitting in the stand was very frustrating. You’re essentially a spectator because you’re not allowed to shout or encourage the players.  It’s the same for all managers in that situation, but being in the technical area is where I belong.

Hyde go into the match with no points on the board as well. They will be up to impress after two defeats. I was there on Monday evening and the home fans were disgruntled. I expect Hyde United will be looking to make amends and that means it will be tough match.  It’s up to us to better them.

Thoughts from the dugout....
12/08/08 10:30

It was unfortunately a blank weekend for Fleetwood Town. The only really positive to take from the situation is the lads who were carrying injuries have been given a few extra days to regain fitness.  Both Hills and Doughty were in Saturday’s squad and will be available for selection again tonight.

I’ve taken in two games now – at Hyde United last night and Burscough on Saturday.  All four teams looked nervous in their first games, but there weren’t too many surprises results-wise.   It’s hard to judge who is going to be a force in the league just now. We need to be at the 10 or 12-game mark before any real judgement is made.  Hopefully we will be up there if get off to a good start.

With missing Saturday, we now have two tough away games. Farsley came down last season and were beaten by Stafford on Saturday. They were an organised conference side and have been strengthened, with some decent players available. Saying that, I’m looking forward to our season opener and I know the lads can’t wait to make a start.

Melissa Brown coaching award
11/08/08 18:30

Fleetwood Town youth coach Melissa Brown has recently passed her FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football. The qualification is a major achievement for any coach - let alone someone studying AS Levels in full-time education.  The purpose of the six-month FA led course is designed to develop coaching skills and techniques, along with demonstrating an understanding of the principles of attack and defence through practices and small-sided games. Health and safety of players, responding to any emergency and establishing positive working relationships are other key areas of the in-depth course.

Melissa Brown during a recent training session

The 17-year-old coaches Fleetwood Town juniors at the Saturday Morning Soccer Club and School Holiday Soccer Club. First team coach Andy Whittaker has witnessed Melissa’s coaching skills himself.  He described the work involved in gaining the certificate. "It is a massive jump from Level 1 coaching to Level 2 qualification. You have to put in so many hours and stage a wide variety of coaching sessions including, boys, girls, children, teenagers and adults. It’s a great achievement for Melissa. It’s similar to the UEFA ‘C’ qualification as well,” said Whittaker, himself a UEFA ‘B’ Coaching License holder. “Hopefully she will continue with her playing career and coaching. As a player you can bring what you have learnt into your team sessions and offer different views of the training to your manager.

"I’m happy to work with the younger coaches at the club. Melissa has watched the first team training sessions a number of times. Whatever we do in the first team can be transmitted into the Juniors and small-side teams. The set up through-out Fleetwood Town is impressive and Melissa clearly demonstrates the commitment and skill found at all levels," added the first team coach.

The Fleetwood-based youngster described the level of commitment needed to progress up the FA coaching ladder. "The Level 2 badge took six months of hard work. It took up a great deal of time in addition to my studies. It consisted of well over 12 hours of sessions, coaching techniques and principles. All this needed to be carefully recorded in a logbook, which was reviewed at the end of the course. I also needed to complete a practical session and an interview. There were fifteen people on my course only five passed. I was the only girl and youngest person. The oldest person was 40 something,” said Melissa. “I will continue with my coaching work at Fleetwood Town. I played for Lytham YMCA last season but have a couple of options open to me at the moment for the new term. I’m studying Sports Science, Biology and English but not sure of a future career. I’m taking my time to decide and may go into coaching or onto university," added the Melissa, looking towards the future.

FTFC Junior keeper Gabi Aston and Melissa Brown

Her achievements have also been recognised at the top level of the club. "This is a magnificent achievement for Melissa and a huge boost for Fleetwood Town. Melissa is a very popular member of the Saturday Morning Club staff and respected throughout Highbury for her abilities and approach. It shows the level of commitment found through-out the club,” commented Town chairman Andy Pilley.

Ashley Dunn on signing a permanent contract
11/08/08 15:00

Ashley Dunn has been speaking about signing his permanent contract at Highbury after being taken through his paces during the close season by his dad.  The Town youngster, who turns 20 next month, is pleased manager Tony Greenwood handed him a 12-month contract. “I’m delighted to sign for Fleetwood Town. When I first came here towards the end of last season, Tony said I would have more of a chance during pre-season. He told me if I proved myself there would be the possibility of a contract.”

The former Morecambe reserves regular then spoke of his recent training regime. “I worked really hard over the summer in the gym and had some testing sessions. My dad has also taken me through some tactical sessions and cardio routines. It’s worked out well and I’ve done ok through the pre-season.   I’ve developed because of the time I put into training and it’s paid-off. I’ve definitely improved from last season so things are looking good for me.”

Dunn also spoke of the Cod Army and how he feels at home in front of them. “The supporters are brilliant. My first game at home had a crowd of 700 and that is great for the UniBond Premier. I was overwhelmed at first to be honest.  Everyone has been really good to me and I’m enjoying my time at Highbury. “

Andy Whittaker on Saturday's Postponement
09/08/08 22:00

First team coach Andy Whittaker spoke on Sunday about his disappointment that Saturday’s opener with Hucknall Town was postponed. “We quickly realised the game would be in doubt because of the surface water collecting on the pitch. We had a good training session on Thursday, so it won’t affect the fitness of the lads. It’s just frustrating. Everyone wants to play in the first game of the season. It’s more disappointing for the fans. The players are tuned in ready and we will have to make the most of Tuesday night,” said the coach.

Whittaker, who joined Fleetwood during the close season, blames the typical summer weather in this country. “I don’t think the postponement will affect the start of the season. The lads understand, but are disappointed.  They are upbeat and primed. It now gives them a free weekend before the action starts. I’ve never known any games in my 20 years of semi-pro football being postponed on the first day of the season. That’s the British weather.”

“Tony, Nigel and I looked at the situation and decided to call it a day. We discussed going over to the Memorial Park for a training session. However, the park was also covered in surface water and training on that sort of surface is asking for trouble. You may end up with two or three injuries.  There’s no point running any risks with a game on Tuesday.

The three of us took in the Burscough-Kings Lynn game instead. We now have a better idea of how these two play. It was a good game. Burscough got a result in the end with an equaliser with 10 or 15 minutes to go. Kings Lynn went one-nil up after 25 minutes or so and then played for the 1-0 win. It’s hard to gauge really because you don’t know if either of them had a full strength team out,” added Whittaker.

Turning his thoughts to Saturday’s Blue Square North results, the former striker said: “Looking at the favourites, Southport won away and that’s a good start for them, keeping a clean sheet as well.  Gateshead were strong with an away win. Telford and Stalybridge held each other to a draw. Looking at it, Stafford also won. I don’t think there were any surprises to be honest.  It’s hard to make any decisions in the first four or five games.

Any club going up would be happy to consolidate and finish in the top ten. I don’t want to put pressure on anyone, but we’ve been put in at 10/1 for a reason. If we have a good start then we won’t be afraid of anyone in this division. The momentum of the promotions over the last four seasons needs to be maintained. Along with the winning mentality Tony has instilled, I don’t think Fleetwood will be easily beaten.  You can see that in the players. They’ve got good attitude and ability in all positions,” said Whittaker as he looked further into the campaign.

Fleetwood Town visit Farsley Celtic on Tuesday (7:45pm kick-off) and travel to Hyde United on Saturday (3:00pm).  The club are running a supporters coach on Saturday. Please see the previous news item for details.

Jon Hills signs for Town
08/08/08 17:15

Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce Jon Hills has signed for the club.

Hills, 30, was released by Blackpool at the end of last season after his third spell with the Championship club. He is very much a left-sided player who can operate at either full back or as an attacking midfielder.

The left back enters manager Tony Greenwood's squad and is ready for selection in Saturday's Blue Square North opener against Hucknall Town at the new-look Highbury Stadium.

Manager Tony Greenwood was upbeat about the signing: "This is a major coup for the club. Hills was playing Championship football for Blackpool last season.  It just goes to show what players think about Fleetwood Town. They can see it is a club on the up. When players do come available, the club is in a position to attract them. They can also see the ground redevelopment and what's happening off the field. People sit up and take notice and then realise something's happening at Fleetwood. To attract players of the calibre of Jon Hills and Phil Doughty speaks for itself. I would say, though, that having a strong squad doesn't guarantee anything and we have plenty of work to do in the league," added
Greenwood.

Phil Doughty - the full interview
08/08/08 17:00

“I can’t wait for the season to start, it’s going to be a very exciting year for everyone connected with the club that much is for sure, and with hard work and dedication over the coming season I’m confident I can more than contribute to help the team kick on towards the conference national, from what I’ve seen so far I think we’ve got enough quality in the side to do that and hopefully we can go from strength.

In many ways I’ve been very lucky, I turned professional straight from school getting into the first team at 16 and one thing that I’d have liked to have done was go to University and continue my education, football’s such a short career, when I broke my leg a couple of years ago nothing was more apparent to me then.  Playing for an ambitious club like Fleetwood allows me to do this, and not if, but when, Andy (Pilley) & Tony (Greenwood) feel the times right to go full time, I’ll have the chance to be right there with them because the further education route gives me the flexibility to do that. I’ve got a point to prove on the pitch too, with the injury setback and Blackpool’s promotion into the Championship I’ve probably not had the opportunities to prove what I can do, so I owe it to myself and the fan’s at Fleetwood Town to give it everything.

Fleetwood initially expressed an interest in getting me and couple of the Blackpool lads in on loan at the end of last season, which just goes to show how ambitions they really are, I had interest from Clubs in League One during the summer which didn’t work out and a couple of firm offers from League 2 clubs down South, and to be fair to Fleetwood the drive, enthusiasm and the desire to do well far exceeded some of the League clubs I spoke with.

We’ve a very focused young chairman in Andy (Pilley), he knows what needs to be done and he’s got the drive to do the job at the highest level, the gaffer Tony Greenwood has been managing Football Teams longer than I’ve been playing the game! I’ve no doubts I’ll learn from Tony and develop myself as a player, he’s won back to back promotions and his reputation speaks for itself.

The chairman’s investing heavily in the ground, one stands gone up, the other’s on its way, and I believe there’s a brand new grandstand scheduled to start next year all being well, we should also be in our own training facilities on Collins Park, Blackpool in a week or so, everything’s happening for the club, I’m coming to Fleetwood with a desire to knuckle down and put in the hard work, no reputation, no given right to do well, Saturday’s going to be a big day for the club at home to Hucknall Town and I’m ready for the challenge!  “

Thoughts from the dugout
08/08/08 14:30

Welcome back from the close-season. The ground is looking great, the pitch is in fine form and the squad is ready after a good pre-season. All we need is you, our supporters, to come through the gate in numbers and get behind the team.  Then we’ll have all the right ingredients to start the Blue Square North campaign in style.

The season starts tomorrow at the new-look Highbury Stadium. It's not the worst possible start we could have had. Our first game is at home against Hucknall who escaped relegation last season. We then visit Farsley, who were relegated last term, for our first away game the following Tuesday.

The Christmas fixtures always catch my eye and we’ve home and away games with Workington over the festive period. A trip all the way up to Cumbria on New Years Day wouldn’t be my first choice but we’ll make the most of it.

The visit to Southport early in the season on the August Bank Holiday will be a tasty one at their place. I’m not surprised they are now one the favourites with Liam Watson once again in charge. Southport and Telford are up there as bookies favourites with Blue Square betting. Fleetwood are at 10-1 and that puts a bit of pressure on us. I guess we are there because of the promotion and that shows the club is on the up with confidence riding high. The Blue Square forecasters will have also looked at our signings and the quality that has been brought in. Odds don't mean anything to me at the moment. What is important is to make a good start to the league campaign.

It’s an exciting time and the lads can’t wait for kick-off.

Phil Doughty signed Thursday for Town
07/08/08 12:00

Fleetwood Town is very pleased to announce Phil Doughty has signed a two contract with the club.  Doughty, 21, impressed manager Tony Greenwood whilst on trial with the Blue Square North newcomers.  The centre half was released by Blackpool at the end of 2007/08 after 5 years on professional terms and since he was 10 as a junior. He made 4 appearances for the Seasiders senior team, scoring one goal against Huddersfield Town. Doughty spent most of last season on loan at Macclesfield Town and Accrington Stanley.

Andy Pilley, chairman, welcomed Phil be saying: "We are delighted to have acquired Phil. He will be a great asset to the club. He’s a player we’ve tracked throughout the close-season and thought he would end up at a Football League club. It’s a credit to the progress we are making that Phil has choose to come to Fleetwood as opposed to offers received from clubs higher up the pyramid."

Phil Doughty was clear about his work rate for his new club: “I can’t wait for the season to start, it’s going to be a very exciting year for everyone connected with the club that much is for sure, and with hard work and dedication over the coming season I’m confident I can more than contribute to help the team kick on towards the conference national, from what I’ve seen so far I think we’ve got enough quality in the side to do that and hopefully we can go from strength.”

"I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to come down on what will be an historic and proud day. The new-look Highbury is something for the whole community," commented chairman Andy Pilley. "The stadium will improve the overall quality of recreational choice on the Fylde Coast. It is something people from the whole area can be a proud. Not only Fleetwood people come to matches. Skelmersdale 0-0 Fleetwood Town
06/08/08 19:00

A Skelmersdale 0-0 Fleetwood Town
Pre-season Friendly
Tuesday 5 August 2008 KO 19:45pm

Fleetwood Town clearly had their eye on the start of Blue Square North campaign this Saturday when they were held to a goalless draw at Skelmersdale. The visitors dropped a gear and made their UniBond North Division One side look impressive. If it wasn't for the handling of keeper Danny Hurst and the poor finishing of the Skelmersdale front men, the score-line might have been different.

Tony Greenwood will be pleased his squad is relatively injury-free for the visit of Hucknall Town, the first meeting of the two teams. Nathan Pond missed the match with the side strain he suffered in Saturday's 3-0 win at Welsh Premier League Caernarfon Town. Andy Bell is the only doubt following his early withdrawal last night with a calf strain. Phil Denney, returning from holiday, came on to replace Bell. The best chance of the half came when Hurst was called on to make a fingertip save on 23 minutes. Adam Birchell's powerful shot was pushed away by the Town keeper only to rattle the woodwork and come back into play. The Fleetwood defence was able to deal with the resulting ball and both teams headed into the break even.

Danny Hurst - clean sheet

Town improved slightly in second period, but was unable to make it seven pre-season away victories out of seven. Skelmersdale sensed it could have been their night but were unable to find the finishing touches they needed. New contract signings Ashley Dunn and Colin Potts both figured in the game, although Potts continued to feel the effects of a heavy Caernarfon challenge that left him needing dental treatment.

"We started quite brightly and got the ball down the channels. Mark Peers again showed his pace. There was then a period of about 25 minutes when we struggled to get on top. We changed at half time and played better football. Unfortunately, we didn't take any of our chances and Skem took the game to us. With nine pre-season games under our belts the lads now want to get stuck into competitive football," said Colin Potts. "I'm really pleased to have finally signed for Fleetwood. It's been quite a time for me to get fit again after being injured in December. I had an operation in January and came to Fleetwood last March. I proved to Tony Greenwood that I was fit during pre-season and was pleased to sign on Saturday," added the winger.

Skelmersdale with feel heartened by a solid performance against a side two divisions above them. But it remains Fleetwood who were able to soak up all the pressure inflicted in the second half and will take that confidence in Saturday's opening game in the Blue Square North.

Thoughts from the dugout
05/08/08 15:00

Tonight’s match at Skelmersdale with give me a better idea of Saturday’s opening line-up.The starting eleven still needs some fine-tuning. I didn’t have the full squad available in Llanberis and tuning can’t take place without them all being present.  The likes of Milligan, Kilbane, Moran and Foster all missing from the Wales trip didn’t help my plans.  The starting line-up for Saturday will probably be seen at some stage during tonight’s match. Whether it’s the first 45 or the last 45 minutes, people can have a guess at that.

It’s also good to see how the new signings have settled into the squad.  I was pleased to see three of the new lads on the score sheet at Caernarfon. Personally, I’d say the Caernarfon display was played far away from the spirit of a friendly game. Tackles were flying in and it was physical. We kept our discipline and the lads should be commended for that.  Saturday was more competitive and we responded well. The only injury worry was Nathan Pond who had a slight side strain. That shouldn’t stop everyone being available for Saturday against Hucknall Town. The lads are all ready now. Hopefully we’ve peaked at the right time to start Blue Square North football.

Yours, TG.

Colin Potts and Ashley Dunn
04/08/08 19:00

The club are delighted to announce Colin Potts and Ashley Dunn have signed contracts.

Ashley Dunn is a former Morecambe FC reserve player. The teenager has also figured for the Lancashire FA in representative matches. Colin Potts joined Town on a non-contract basis in March last season. Conference side Altrincham released Potts, who plays wide, in December 2007.

Chairman Andy Pilley was pleased with the news: “I’d like to formally welcome Ashley Dunn and Colin Potts after they both signed permanent contracts following last Saturday’s victory over Caernarfon Town.  Both have impressed (manager) Tony Greenwood over the pre-season. Colin is a very experienced, quality wide-man who will no doubt create numerous goals over the course of the season.  He can look after himself as well as being a skilful winger. These aren’t attributes always found in a wide player.

"Ashley Dunn is a very good prospect. All credit to Ashley because he has forced himself into the reckoning for the first team squad and he looks like an exciting outlook.  He’s a teenager and hopefully he has a big future ahead of him at Highbury,“ added the chairman.

Fleetwood Town skipper Jamie Milligan joined youngsters during their holiday soccer skills course at Highbury yesterday.  Milligan led a coaching session and presented awards to the young players who attended the week-long course.

Town's leading scorer last season was impressed by the sessions. "Chris Garrett is doing well with the training schools.  The kids clearly enjoy themselves.  The training pitches on the Memorial Park have improved a lot recently. The goals are in place and it’s a decent set up for coaching children. The football coaches are all young, enthusiastic and have decent skills," said Milligan.

"I certainly enjoyed myself today.  We did a few one on ones and that put the youngsters through their paces. It's important that first teams players take part in the schools and Juniors setup," commented Town's leading scorer.

"Children and parents coming down to the soccer school can see the building improvements at the club. The new-look stadium is there for all to see.  Hopefully, a good number of those who come to the soccer schools will want to come along to games with their parents.  Having a bigger attendance is great for the team as it carries us along," added the skipper.

The next courses are Monday 4th to Thursday 7th August, with an
educational visit on Friday 8th to Everton's ground. This is followed by a school on Monday 18th to Thursday 21st August, with an educational visit on Friday 22nd to Manchester City.

The cost is £10 each day and £12 for visits.  The club Community Development Officer, Chris Garrett, can be contacted on 07760 363543 for bookings and further details.
