December 2006/07

Press Release:

John Hardiker has been released by Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee and has joined Forest Green Rovers.

The former Stockport County defender struggled to adapt to life in the UniBond League Premier Division and, after being informed that he was not a part of Fleetwood’s future plans, Hardiker opted to link up with his former Morecambe boss, Jimmy Harvey, at Conference National side, Forest Green Rovers.

Hardiker has already been replaced by recent signing Ricky Mercer but his departure will now allow manager Tony Greenwood to consider further new signings. Expect more news very soon.

The Radcliffe Borough match report is available HERE.

More on Theme Tunes:

Well, we're sat here at the dawn of a New Year, but still with the Old Year's weather, contemplating the choice of music for match day when the thought occurs 'Who will play it'?

Les Taylor is doing a fine job as the 'Public Announcer' at the moment, but he has lots of other duties to perform on match days so:-

Public Announcer Required:

Fleetwood Town FC are looking for a volunteer to take over Public Announcements on Match Days. Duties would obviously include pre and post match music, together with goal announcements, team changes, sponsors, next game, and so on. If you are interested, or would like more information, please email the Club by clicking HERE.

So It's Kendal by Coach Then?

It is true that the Supporters Coach to Radcliffe was not well supported!
However, if there is sufficient demand, the Club will always be happy to make the necessary arrangements for you.

Another good thing to come out of the Radcliffe game, apart from 3 points, was the way you used email to reserve your coach seats. With no games, and hence no Club Shop open for bookings, this offers an almost foolproof way of assessing the financial viability of a coach booking.

We would normally have to book a coach for a Saturday game on Wednesday, so please email your Kendal reservations before noon on January 3rd. Book Here.

If you know of coach regulars who do not have email access, please let us know.

You Will Not Like This.....

But today's game against Witton has just been called off.
Heavy overnight rain has left the pitch with some patches of standing water and other areas of soft mud.

Fleetwood Town v Witton Albion - Saturday - 3:00pm

The Radcliffe game on Boxing Day was a good morale booster, not only for us fans, but for the whole squad as they finally got the goals and the points that their recent endeavours warranted. With several of the top teams only managing a draw, and with Witton Albion losing at home to Leek Town, the promotion chase is definitely on.

Phil Denney is unavailable for tomorrow's game but, otherwise, Tony Greenwood has a full squad available for selection and, with Richie Allen approaching match fitness, we would hope to see him at some point in the game.

Remember It's 'Kids for a Quid' on Saturday:

Radcliffe Borough 0 Fleetwood Town 2

A solid team performance, with Nathan Pond leading by example, earned Fleetwood all three points today with goals by Jamie Milligan (penalty) and Mickey Saunders. A good day out! Report to follow.

So Here It Is!

Merry Christmas!

From all the players and staff at FTFC, may I wish you a very Merry Christmas. Life is never dull around Highbury these days and I really am pleased that the Cod Army is in there with us. I hope that you are enjoying the ride! We start again on Boxing Day at Radcliffe. See you there.

Supporters' Coach to Radcliffe on Boxing Day

Thanks to some hard undercover work by the forum stalwarts, we are happy to announce that the Radcliffe Coach is ON!

The bookings grew to 20 overnight which, although still short of our mid-twenties decision target for the 48 seat coach, is enough to get us on the road. We are also aware of the dearth of public transport on Boxing Day and your affinity for alcohol! Now that the coach is definite, perhaps you can all lever in a few of the waverers and get the bus filled up!

So, it's meet at the ground at noon, when we will be boarding on a first come first on basis and paying on the coach. Remember that it's the season of goodwill!

Finally, thanks to those of you who emailed their bookings; without you there would be no coach!

Party On!

Burscough Reserves 3  Fleetwood Town Reserves 5

Goals: Pond 2, Haddow, Milligan and Saunders.

Town took the entire first team squad for a much needed workout at Burscough for this Lancashire League Cup game. Against a young and spirited side, Town dominated the early exchanges and it was no surprise when Nathan Pond scored with a crisp shot from the edge of the box after nine minutes. However, Burscough responded almost straight away and equalised following a flowing move down their right wing.

Fleetwood realised they had a game on their hands and stepped up the pace accordingly. Goals from Jamie Milligan, Paul Haddow, Mickey Saunders and another from Pond gave the visitors a five one lead. Naturally the pace dropped in the second period but, to give the home side credit, they were the better of the two sides.

A blatantly offside goal and a comical third added some respectability to the score line for them. On seventy minutes the long awaited return of Richard Allen came about when he replaced Ged Smith on the left wing. Almost immediately he created a goal chance for Andy Bell  and he remained a constant threat for the remainder of the game.

Team-Banks, Robinson, Fitzgerald, Mercer, Gray, Pond, Milligan, Saunders, Haddow, Bell and Smith. Substitutes: Beech for Haddow,  Allen for Smith and Charnock for Saunders.

Tired and Irritable?

The kids are off school, the Mother-in-Law is with you for the best part of two weeks, and there's no FTFC at Highbury until December 30th.

Swallow your pride Cods, there is only one cure. Get down to Highbury tomorrow (Wednesday) evening for Blackpool Reserves v Preston North End Reserves. PNE have an excellent crop of youngsters this term so, for only £3 (juniors £1.50) and a couple of quid for a pint, we can banish your blues.

Kick Off is 7:00 pm and all gate receipts go to Fleetwood.

Far Flung Cods...Again

FTFC are compiling a list of long range supporters, the Far Flung Cods.

We are doing this, firstly because it would be fascinating for all we local Cods to know just how far flung you are but, secondly, so that we can explore ways of making your support a bit more engaging.

Initially, we thought that Far Flung Cods would be found in distant places but, in truth, it applies to anyone who is unable to get to games on a regular basis.

This request was posted on the forum a week or so ago, so we already have a small shoal, stretching 4527 miles as it happens, but we know there are more of you out there! Please send an email to ian@fleetwoodtownfc.com and let's see what transpires......

Regular forum dwellers will have enjoyed the thread, a few days ago, when the topic of a theme tune, to be played as the teams run on to the pitch, was aired.

The new Public Address system means that we can now welcome the teams in this way - but what is the music to be?

Email your suggestions to info@fleetwoodtownfc.com with 'Theme Tune' as the subject. Check back here in a few days for the shortlist of the most popular suggestions

Shaun Gray Signs for Fleetwood Town

Fleetwood Town FC are delighted to announce the signing of Morecambe centre half Shaun Gray on a permanent basis.

Gray has been on loan with Town for the past month following a similarly successful spell at Highbury Stadium last season when his 11 appearances coincided with the vital run in which saw Fleetwood clinch a second successive promotion.

Gray has now accumulated 18 league and cup appearances for Town scoring 4 goals.

With Martin Moran, Phil Robinson and another recent signing, Ricky Mercer, also competing for the central defensive berths, Gray’s arrival means that Town now have 4 top quality centre halves available to manager Tony Greenwood.

Chairman Andy Pilley commented 'we are delighted to secure Shaun’s services permanently and one of the great advantages of the loan system is that we already know we are signing genuine quality with Shaun. He has performed superbly in his two spells with us and has the potential to improve even further. Shaun knows how ambitious we are and I’m sure that this move will be a great success for both parties.'

Matlock has avoided most of the rain over the last two days and, although some rain is forecast for Friday, everyone is optimistic that the game will go ahead.

No Supporters Coach to Matlock

Sorry that it's taken a while to make the decision, but we will not be running a Supporters' Coach to the Matlock Game on Saturday.

The cancellation of the Barrow game didn't help communications, but our indications were that the coach would not be well supported. In addition, the Matlock pitch is in a similar condition to our own and so, with those dual uncertainties, we have opted not to run the coach.

Regarding the Matlock game, we are endeavouring to get you a 'best guess' on the state of the pitch on Friday with an indication of the timing of any inspections on Saturday. The intention is then to post the inspection results, if an inspection is necessary,  on Saturday morning before you need to travel. Do remember that the game is 'on' unless your hear different!

The club does remain committed to Supporter's Coaches, however, and it is our intention to lay on a coach to Radcliffe on Boxing Day - if there is demand. If you wish to go, then email info@fleetwoodtownfc.com giving your full name - now!

New Date for Barrow

As expected, the postponed UCCT tie will now be played at Barrow on Tuesday December 19th. Under competition rules, the home advantage is forfeited after two postponements.

Ten Man Reserves Earn Draw at Skelmersdale

Following the sending off of Mark Davies, a goal from Anthony Warwick earned the Reserves a battling 1-1 draw at Skelmersdale. Report on the forum.

Barrow Game Off

Following a pitch inspection at 10.00am this morning, tonight's game against Barrow has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch. We await details of the re-arranged fixture.

Boardroom Changes

Fleetwood Town FC are delighted to announce that long-serving director Phil Brown has been appointed as vice-chairman.

Chairman Andy Pilley commented: 'Phil plays a vital role at this club and has done for many years. He is a great source of support to me personally and I wanted both his position as my number 2 and the role that he plays behind the scenes, to be recognised appropriately; hence my offer of the vice-chairman position'.

In a further boardroom change, Paul Cambridge returns to the board of directors in a non-executive capacity, with special responsibilities for initiatives aimed at attracting new supporters.

Reserves held to draw at Leigh

The Reserves drew 1-1 in Saturday's Lancashire League fixture at Leigh RMI, with Mark Butler scoring. See Stu Harris' report on the forum.

Fleetwood Town 1 Matlock Town 1

A well deserved draw and, despite even more rain, a good team performance from Fleetwood Town against an in-form Matlock. The opening goal went to Andy Bell, equalised by a bit of a gift to Tom Cahill, and a man of the match debut for Ricky Mercer. Report.

Fleetwood Town sign Ricky Mercer

Fleetwood Town FC are delighted to announce the signing of Kendal Town centre half, Ricky Mercer.

Ricky, who is 23 years of age, was Kendal's club captain and his capture is seen as another major coup for Fleetwood Town.

Having begun his career as a scholar with Preston North End, Mercer made his name with Lancaster City before leaving the Giant Axe to follow his ex-boss, Tony Hesketh, to Kendal.

Ricky Mercer is a strong and commanding player and is seen as a replacement for recent departees, Joe McMahon who is now with Vauxhall Motors and John Hardiker who is currently on loan at Forest Green Rovers.

Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley commented: "Ricky is just the type of player that we need at this vital stage of the season and all connected with the club offer his a warm welcome to Highbury Stadium.

We expect Ricky to be in tomorrow's team against Matlock Town.
