Defender says Town were worth three points
Fleetwood Town defender Charlie Taylor was named as Sky Sports’ man of the match in the goalless draw at Scunthorpe United on Monday night.
The 20-year-old, on loan from Championship side Leeds United, put in a marauding performance in front of the live cameras and won the penalty which Steven Schumacher unfortunately saw saved.
It nearly helped the Cod Army maintain their 100 per cent start to 2014 but, despite sensing a missed opportunity at the League Two leaders, Taylor was pleased with his own performance in the game at Glanford Park.
“I thought I played well and, as a team, we were unlucky not to come away with three points,” said Taylor.
“I was pleased to play the ninety minutes and I felt we switched the ball out to me quite a bit.
“I had the opportunity to get one on one with the defender and I managed to get a few crosses in, where we had a bit of joy.
“There was one block near half-time, although Scott (Davies) probably would have saved it anyway. However, you can’t take that risk and luckily I got my body in the way and blocked it.”
Taylor was at the heart of the game’s main incident when Iron winger Terry Hawkridge sent him tumbling inside the box just past the hour mark.
Reflecting on the foul, Taylor said: “I thought it was a penalty. The defender definitely made contact with me. Unfortunately, their keeper has pulled off a good save from Schumacher’s penalty.”
Despite missing the chance to move top of the table, Taylor felt a win and a draw from two tough away games was enough – although he admitted Monday’s night draw felt like two points dropped.
“You would take four points out of six from the last two games,” he said. “But maybe now it feels like two points lost at Scunthorpe.
“It’s the first time I have ever played two games in three days, so it was a good experience for me. I was knackered afterwards but I’ll go again against York on Saturday now.”
