Boss wants improved away and cup form this coming season

Manager Steven Pressley believes it is an opportunity for his players to put down a marker when they travel to Northampton Town on the opening day of the EFL Sky Bet League One season.

The Cod Army will face last season’s League Two champions at Sixfields and the boss feels it will be a tough fixture but one he can’t wait.

“I did want an opening home game,” admitted Pressley. “We didn't get that but including the Leeds game we then have three consecutive home games which gives us an opportunity.

“With our away form last year being poor I think that it certainly an opportunity to put down a marker.

“It will be a great game as well and they will have a terrific home support.

“They are newly promoted and it will be their first game of the season in a new league and I imagine there will be a really good crowd. I think it is going to be a challenging fixture.

“I spent half of my two years at Coventry, maybe a bit more playing at Northampton. So it will be very familiar. At that time of the season the pitch will be of a real quality.

“It is certainly an interesting opening day fixture. I have not really read into the fixtures too much. You can talk about good sides or good fixtures but ultimately there are no good fixtures if you don't get good results.

“Looking back to last season we probably got our best run of results in what you could probably describe as our most difficult set of fixtures. So I don't read too much into it.

“One of the things I think we can improve on is our form in the cup competitions. This season I would love to make an impact in them.

“The Leeds game is a fantastic fixture. In terms of prestige of the opponents we could have got in the cup they are up there. It is an exciting fixture but we want to progress.”
