Fleetwood Town have made a 7th summer signing by bringing Mark Roberts to Highbury.

The 29-year-old joins from League 1 Stevenage Borough were he clocked-up just under 200 appearances since initially joining on loan in 2008.

“I was massively impressed with this club from the first moment. Joining Fleetwood is an exciting prospect and I jumped at the chance after seeing the plans and hearing the chairman’s vision,” said Roberts.

The central defender is a graduate of the renowned Crewe Alexandra academy and included hometown side Northwich Victoria and Accrington Stanley on his playing CV before helping Borough to double promotions to League 2 and then League 1.

The defender will return to Northwich with the Town squad for a pre-season friendly on Thursday evening.

“It’s bizarre how football turns out sometimes. I grew-up in Northwich and they were the first team I ever played for as a 10-year-old. I’m sure a great deal has changed but it will be good to go back.”

Roberts has also turned his hand briefly to management when appointed caretaker manager at Stevenage in January 2012 and March 2013. The former Stevenage skipper has no regrets about switching back to League 2.

“I’m an ambitious person and an ambitious player. The manager and chairman have shown me this club is geared to success and I want to play my role in that success with Fleetwood Town.”

The defender was a free agent after rejecting a new contract at Broadhall Way
