Midfielder has become an important player for Town this season

Nick Haughton was named as Fleetwood Town’s Young player of the year at the Club’s annual awards night on Saturday evening.

The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed for the Cod Army, having made 22 appearances since breaking into the first-team at Highbury Stadium.

Haughton, who made his first-team bow in the 1-0 win over Port Vale back in October, reflected upon his first senior campaign on the Fylde Coast, which has seen him become a pivotal member of Town’s squad.

Speaking to the Club’s website, he said: “It has been a crazy season really, and I just want more of the same next year.

“I was nowhere near fit at the start but came in during pre-season full-time and worked hard to get myself fitter and stronger. I’ve played first-team games and I’m loving it.

“I started training earlier on in the season with the first-team, but still played development games, so I was getting the mix of it, but when I made my debut it was a massive step up and I loved it.

“The gaffer made me wait and you have to be patient in football, but when I got my chance I took it. The fans are class, they are there every week supporting the lads, so I love it.

“It’s mad, to go from park pitches to stepping out at Bramall Lane and scoring the winner, but it has been a massive change in such a short space of time.

Having started the season in Barry Nicholson’s Development Squad, Haughton hopes to see more players coming through into the first-team, with the likes of Tyler Forbes and Ashley Hunter also joining Haughton in the first team.

“In the past week they have had two really good victories. They have a really strong squad and the gaffer isn’t afraid to throw them in if they are needed."
