Team head to Preston for their second full week...
Fleetwood Town’s Community Trust has had a new intake of students on the Club’s popular NCS programme.Under the guidance of NCS Co-ordinator Joey Newson, a new member of staff at Fleetwood Town, the youngsters enjoyed a fantastic trip north of the border in Scotland at Lockerbie.
Joey, a former Fleetwood Town U18s player, spoke to the Club for the very first time at what the new intake of NCS students have been up to with a new adventure already scheduled for this week.
“It has been really good. It has been a challenge coming in a couple of weeks ago and going straight onto the course. We have a great group and they have made the first week really enjoyable and easy for the staff.
“We went up to Lockerbie in Scotland fir the first week. It was a great adventure for everyone. We head off to Preston today (Monday) to Hothersall Lodge and we will be looking to teach the young people life skills.
“So that means budgeting, cooking, and cleaning. We are teaching them skills that they will need to use on a day to day basis.
“We will be at Hothersall until Friday evening. The programme runs continuous for four weeks. The first week we did team building activities, the second learning life skills and the third and fourth is devising a social action project in the community
“We will then go out and deliver that in the community and for the people living in Fleetwood.
“It is a really important project. We are bringing people together; they are learning off one another and building a great team spirit.
“It is fantastic; we are getting people out of their comfort zones and teaching them new things.”
Talking a bit about himself, Joey gave a brief background on his career so far and how a return to Highbury Stadium came about.
He concluded: “I played football growing up and actually played for Fleetwood. I picked up an injury which stopped me playing and I opted to go to university and studied a degree in sports development and coaching.
“I went on to America but earlier this year I moved back to England with health problems but I saw the opportunity to work for a such a wonderful club like Fleetwood Town and it is great to see how it has developed over the last five years since I left. It is great to be back at the Club in this capacity.”
