Antoni Sarcevic has been appointed vice captain
Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce that Nathan Pond is the Club’s new captain ahead of the 2015/16 Sky Bet League One season, with Antoni Sarcevic appointed vice-captain.Manager Graham Alexander informed the pair and the remainder of the team earlier this week ahead of Saturday’s opener against Southend United.
Pond, the Club’s current longest serving player, has represented Fleetwood Town in seven different divisions, with his remarkable achievement a current World Record.
The 30-year-old centre back joined the Cod Army back in March 2003 as an 18-year-old as Town were plying their trade in the North West Counties League First Division.
Six promotions later, and Pond will lead Town out ahead of the 2015/16 League One season, and he told the Club website that he is ready to lead by example.
“I am delighted with the decision,” said Pond. “The vice-captain will be Antoni Sarcevic and I think every team needs more than one leader on the pitch.
“It was a proud moment when I found out. We have had three or four different captains throughout pre-season. I have tried to lead by example every day and I am over the moon to be the new Fleetwood Town captain.
“Myself and Sarc (Antoni Sarcevic) know exactly what the Club is all about. We have both been here a long time now. Our characters will not change however we will continue to be exactly how we have been.
“We will try and pass our experiences on and say what we think needs to be said.
“We had a good win on Friday night against Getafe and it was a strong performance. Unfortunately I didn’t play but I am now back in training. We are ready for the new season and we can’t wait to get started.
Vice skipper Sarcevic has also had a big say in Town’s recent history, having scored the winning goal in the League Two Play-Off final against Burton Albion at Wembley in May 2014.
The 23-year-old hit a brace last Friday against Getafe, and admits the lads are all geared up to have a memorable season.
“There are a few younger lads in the team this season. The squad has changed and myself and Pondy will be trying to lead by example.
“The Club have a new structure in place which is great. We have to keep on doing what we are doing and behave in the right way. We are focused on having a good season.
“We have a lot of good options throughout the team and it is exactly what we need.”
