Winger speaks after notching his first goal in Fleetwood colours
Josh Morris believes his first Fleetwood Town goal has kept the club in with a chance of automatic promotion from League Two this season.
The midfielder, on loan from Blackburn Rovers, scored the winner in the Cod Army’s 2-1 victory at Cheltenham Town on Good Friday – after Antoni Sarcevic had levelled Jamie Cureton’s opener for the Robins.
All of Fleetwood’s top-three rivals dropped points on the same day, meaning Graham Alexander’s side closed the gap to Chesterfield and Rochdale, who sit second and third, to just three points.
And Morris felt that, with the Cod Army capitalising on results elsewhere in the second half, his side remain in the hunt for automatic promotion.
“It keeps us up there,” said Morris.
“We found out at half-time that they (Rochdale and Chesterfield) were both losing, and we were 1-0 down, so it was up to us to get our act together in the second half, and that’s what we did.”
Fleetwood found themselves a goal behind at the break after being penned in their own half for much of the first period.
“It was hard on the pitch, we tried to play it at times and probably overplayed a little bit,” said Morris.
“In the second half we realised the pitch was poor and that we just had to turn it around.”
The Cod Army equalised following the interval when Iain Hume was fouled in the penalty area by Matt Richards.
Sarcevic stepped up to smash the resulting spot-kick high to the right to equalise, and Morris was confident about the midfielder’s chances given his goal record this season.
“There was no doubt he would put it away,” said Morris.
“Ever since I’ve been here, I don’t think he’s missed one yet and he’s scored a lot of goals. He’s done really well and he’s a great player.
“Most importantly, though, we got the three points and we move on to Monday now.
“Hopefully we can win again because then it will be really close for the last two games of the season.”
