Goalkeeper gets set for return to Wembley

Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell was instrumental in helping the Cod Army reach Wembley for the first time in 29 years last night, with a string of fine saves.

The Welshman has been an ever present between the sticks since returning from a loan spell at Cambridge United in January, and has impressed many on his way to keeping ten clean sheets, including two against York in the Play-Offs.

Maxwell, 23, appeared twice at Wembley last season for Wrexham, and was part of the team that defeated Grimsby Town on penalties in the FA Trophy.

Leading through Matty Blair’s close range finish from the first leg, Town knew that a draw would be good enough to book their place at the home of football on Monday 26th May.

Speaking to the club’s official website during the celebrations, the keeper said: “It’s a fantastic achievement. I think it’s difficult when you’re in play-off games as anything can happen, but we’ve justified it over the last two games, and together as a unit we were solid and showed a lot of strength as a team. It’s going to be an exciting day!

It was former Minsterman Matty Blair who got the all-important goal for Graham Alexander’s side at Bootham Crescent on Monday evening, and Maxwell added that any goal is an important one in the play-offs: “They’re all going to be important goals no matter game you play. We’ve done well so far, but it’s not the end yet and there’s nothing to celebrate because we’ve got to make sure we’ve all got our heads on.”

The shotstopper was quick to heap praise on his teammates though on what will be a night that lives long in the memory on the Fylde coast: “It’s not just me, and it’s not just the back four, it’s everybody as a team. The whole eleven and three substitutes that came on all had a part to play. We showed that we’re a hard working side all over the pitch, and it’s a fantastic occasion for all involved.”
