Urwin is the third goalkeeper to join Fleetwood this summer

Fleetwood Town have completed the signing of AFC Fylde goalkeeper Matty Urwin. The 22-year-old shot stopper is the third goalkeeper to link up with the Cod Army this summer, following the arrivals of Chris Neal and Alex Cairns.

Urwin, who has previously played for Blackburn Rovers and Bradford City, told the Club website he couldn’t turn down the opportunity Fleetwood presented to him.

“I am really excited for the new season. It is an opportunity I could not pass up. It is a new look goalkeeping department and I can’t wait for the start of pre-season.

“I started out at Blackburn Rovers from a young age up until 20. I left Blackburn and I have been at a few different non-league clubs.

“I spent one season at Bradford City. I didn’t get a lot of playing time at Bradford but I enjoyed the experience. I was even on the bench when Bradford won at Chelsea in the FA Cup two seasons ago.

“Thinking back to the game against Chelsea, it is surreal. The lads were brilliant. It didn’t surprise me that we won because the lads’ mind set was second to none; they were fantastic from start to finish.

“I was at AFC Fylde last season as we reached the Play-Offs but we didn’t quite reach our goal of winning promotion.

“I played with a couple of the Fleetwood players last season with the likes of Akil Wright coming on loan to Fylde. There are a number of good young players at Fleetwood.

“I will work hard and see where it takes me at Fleetwood. I have to do my best and hopefully it will take me where I want to end up.”
