Defender talks to students about life away from football
Cod Army captain Mark Roberts visited Fleetwood Town High School earlier this month to speak to local students.The visit came about after a strong relationship with the Trust and the High School. The head teacher, Mr Barnes, was keen for the skipper to speak with students about his career and life outside of football.
The 14 students at Fleetwood High are all football mad and Mr Barnes believed that Fleetwood Town could further help to engage this small group by using a player and football to motivate them.
Robbo, who is sponsored by Fleetwood Town Community Trust, was the perfect candidate after already doing similar mentoring roles in his time at Stevenage and Fleetwood Town. As well as this, Mark is a well-educated man having degrees in both Sports Journalism and Garden Design.
The discussion started with Mark talking about his career and the goals he set early on in his career to get to where he is now. Roberts spoke about life after football for him and the importance education has in his life. By the end of the session pupils identified short term goals for themselves, and how they could reach their long terms goals.
Pupils were fascinated with Mark’s story, and with most of them being Cod Army fans it was a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk to a player that they can look up to.
Town’s number 5 said: ‘‘It’s always great to be able to help the next generation and be involved in the fantastic work this Club does in the community. I think it’s a really important part of being a footballer and hopefully the pupils at Fleetwood High enjoyed the mentoring session as much as me.”
