Cod Army return back down south with a trip to Oxford United this weekend
Manager Graham Alexander wants Fleetwood Town to win as many games as possible from now until the end of the League Two season – starting at Oxford United on Saturday.
The Cod Army head to the Kassam Stadium this weekend sitting fourth in the table, trailing Chesterfield in the last automatic promotion spot by five points with six games left.
And Alexander hopes Town’s final push for a top-three finish will begin with victory when they take on the Us.
“We want to try and get into that top three, but we’ll only do that by winning games,” said Alexander.
“It’s an important stage of the season, so we need to win as many games as possible.
“The players are focused on the job in hand because we’ve got six massive games coming up.”
Fleetwood were held to a 1-1 draw by Oxford at Highbury Stadium in November, when Dave Kitson’s 89th-minute header cancelled out Steven Schumacher’s opener.
The Us, however, have since appointed Gary Waddock as manager after Chris Wilder’s departure to Northampton Town in January.
And Alexander believes Waddock’s side will be difficult to beat having played against the 52-year-old as a player.
“They (Oxford) are a good team who have been up there at the top early in the season,” he said.
“I know Gary from my playing days. He’s a great professional and a great guy. He’s trying to change their style a little bit and they’ll be a tough opponent.
“We have to make sure we continue against a good opponent, though, and make sure we go there looking to win the game.”
One thing the Town manager is looking to avoid in Oxfordshire, however, is a repeat of the Cod Army’s last away trip which saw them slip to a 3-0 defeat at Exeter City.
“We can’t afford a repeat performance (of Exeter) like that,” he said.
“We have to make sure we go down to Oxford and give the supporters a better showing than we did on our last journey.”
