Assistant manager speaks to Club website after 1-1 draw with Orient

Assistant manager Chris Lucketti spoke of his pride for the team’s performances throughout the month of August after Town finished their first month in League One with a 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient.

Lucketti mentioned how the team did well to get a point out of a strong Orient side and showed good mental character to fight back from conceding their first goal in open play this season.

The 42-year-old, speaking to Cod Army player moments after the final whistle said: “It was a hard fought point against a very good team with very good players. They’ll be up there at the end of the season so we’re delighted with the point.

“I thought we started the game excellently and they got the goal probably against the run of play which we were disappointed with.

Adding: “I think it knocked the stuffing out of us for 15-20 minutes and maybe ten minutes into the second half but the last 30-35 minutes of the second half we showed what we are all about, our fitness levels came through and we got the all important equaliser through Dobbie.”

“Mentally it can be a hammer blow but the lads have proved their spirit and desire that they have got and their never say die attitude to come back and thoroughly deserved the point that we got.”

Lucketti also expressed his delight at the side still being unbeaten saying: “You are where you are and you are where you deserve to be and after the first month we deserve to be where we are and we’re delighted. We won’t get carried away we know it’s a long season but we’ll certainly enjoy and look to build on how we’ve started the season.”

The two substitutes made by the management team turned the game around for Fleetwood as Stephen Dobbie scored while Gareth Evans almost scored a late winner from a Matty Blair throughball, something Lucketti says shows the depth in the squad:

“I thought the subs today made a real impact. Obviously Dobs with a fantastic finish and Blairy just gave us a little bit more energy and a little bit more attacking impetus.

“He came on and was a big part in Dobs goal and all credit to the squad because we have got some very, very good players that are on the bench, in the treatment room and in the stand. This is part of being a successful team, you need a squad that is together and a squad that is capable of coming off the bench and doing a job.”

Next up is the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie with neighbours Morecambe, a competition Lucketti is hoping the Cod Army can go well in: “It’s a great competition and one that we did very well in last season but we’ll prepare right and look forward to it. Morecambe will ask a few questions of us themselves because they’ve made a very good start and will be fully of confidence so it should be a cracking game.”
