Former Bolton player was named in new role on Wednesday
Fleetwood Town manager Graham Alexander believes the addition of Gretar Steinsson as the Club’s new Technical Director will help to further improve the set-up.Steinsson was named in his new role on Wednesday afternoon, and will help with modernising the whole structure of the Club.
A former Icelandic international who appeared prominently for Bolton Wanderers, Steinsson last worked with AZ Alkmaar in Holland before joining Town.
Alexander said: “Gretz has come in as Technical Director in a non-football role, and he’s going to be working behind the scenes with everything from analysis to fitness to recruitment.
“He will modernise the whole structure of the Club to enable us to focus on what’s important for ourselves.
“This Club is growing every week and what we’re trying to do is put a structure in place which will support that properly.
“It’ll mean that we haven’t got one person doing three jobs and the days of that have gone now in my opinion.
“It’s now a highly professional outfit and we know how we want to run things as staff, and I think Gretz will come in and add to that.
“We spoke about the structure and the actual staffing of the Club at the start of last season, and we felt that we were probably under staffed in different aspects.
“We could still possibly bring in someone in on the coaching side of things in the future because we can see how the Club is growing.
“We brought in Stuart Murdoch last year in a Director of Football role which we’d looked at from the previous summer, and now Gretz has come in on this side.
“When I first came here there was a small group of people doing lots of jobs, and nobody can fully commit to their specific role if they’re doing other things left, right and centre.
“What this does is give everyone a specific role and a specific line of management which will only help us going forward.”
Alexander took charge of his first training session at the new Poolfoot Farm Complex this morning, and was impressed with the facility.
“The training pitch down at Lytham was frozen solid earlier on in the week so we didn’t actually manage to train, so we decided to come and try the new 4G out.
“It’s a fantastic surface and gives us a great alternative to what we’ve got in Lytham, and allows us to get some decent work done.
“It is a struggle at the moment because we haven’t had much coaching time with the lads because of the pitch condition, so this is a step forward and gives the lads a taste of what is to come.”
