Goals from Myers and Coulson earned Town victory

Fleetwood Town’s youth team recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Lancashire rivals Morecambe at the UCLan Sports Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

Goals from Louis Myers and Thomas Coulson sealed the win for Craig Madden’s men over the Shrimps in the North West Youth Alliance league.

Elliot Wynne continued in goal for the young Cod Army, with regulars Myers and Liam Wood also starting on a windy day in Preston.

In a game which Town dominated from start to finish, Fleetwood midfielder Michael Tetteh was first to try his luck after five minutes, though his drilled effort deflected away for a corner.

Wood then had another chance for Town, but after receiving a knock-down Louis Myers, the midfielder blazed his volley over the bar.

At the other end, Fleetwood stopper Wynne was forced into action as he had to keep out a tame effort from long-range.

Wynne’s opposite number, Max Povey, was then called into action himself, with the keeper having to acrobatically palm away Myers powerful effort.

Fleetwood would take the lead from the resulting corner-kick, courtesy of striker Myers, on 32 minutes.

Dan Mooney hit a pin-point in swinging ball into the box, which was glanced home by Myers to hand Fleetwood the advantage.

Jordan Hancox then could have considered himself unfortunate not to add a second for Fleetwood, as he had a close-range effort valiantly saved by Povey.

With the first half drawing to a close, Mooney once again put a lovely cross in via a free-kick, which was then headed over by an unmarked Myers.

As the second-half commenced, Morecambe looked to get back into proceedings, and went close on 50 minutes when Oliver Box unleashed a left-footed drive just past the post of Wynne.

The hosts were struggling to create any clear-cut chances following that, with Andy Smith and his fellow defenders standing strong to thwart any Morecambe attacks.

Fleetwood added a second through Coulson in the 71st minute, as he netted confidently from Mooney’s corner.

Mooney then looked to grab a goal of his own late on, but curled the ball wide from a tight angle, while Mamadou Djabi was felled in the area.

Djabi couldn’t dispatch his 77th minute spot-kick though, with Povey making up for his error by saving well.
