Young Cod Army will head into the season in high spirits

Fleetwood Town’s youth team beat Cheshire League outfit Wythenshawe Town in their final pre-season friendly at Highbury on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Tetteh opened the scoring for the young Cod Army before they doubled their advantage in the second period when a visiting defender put through his own goal.

Nathan Rooney’s side have won all five of their friendlies to-date and will head into the new season in high spirits.

He said: “Michael got the first goal with a great little inside run and the ball ended up in the bottom corner via a slight deflection off the keeper.

“With all the pressure we gave them in the second half the ball was always going to go in the net again, and the second goal came from an own goal from the centre half.

“There’s goals in the team and there’s endeavour in the team. The lads worked tirelessly off the ball and that’s what is needed at this stage of the season.

“The manager told me yesterday that the game against Wythenshawe has been going on for the last five years.

“They’re friends of the chairman and is an annual game each year as they enjoy being a part of our pre-season schedule.

“In previous seasons our lads have been beaten, but they matched them in all areas yesterday and put the goals past them.

“With the lads being up against men it was probably the final game of pre-season that we needed.

“It’s been a really good period of the season for us so far. I’m quite shocked as to how the lads have all gelled together so quickly.”

The Young Cod Army kick off their Youth Alliance Season with a trip to Port Vale this weekend, and Rooney is hoping they can continue their form.

“We’re going to be realistic this season as we’ve got a large squad. The emphasis this season is to get more players through to the development squad.

“Myself and Barry Nicholson have been talking about which players have been knocking on the door already, so it’s all about keeping the hard work up.

“With this start it’s all about keeping the consistency together now and it’s how we can motivate each other to keep going.”
