Wigan Athletic will be hopeful of an immediate return to the Championship next season following relegation last season.
After parting company with Malky Mackay in April, Latics stalwart Gary Caldwell stepped into the DW dugout to see out the rest of the campaign – but could not prevent the club slipping into England’s third-tier.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a prolonged career in the game prior to taking the Wigan managerial post.
Beginning his trade at Celtic’s Boys Club, Caldwell signed for Newcastle United in 2001 – but with opportunities limited at St James’ Park, the defender spent time on loan at Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County.
The Stirling native moved back to Hibernian permanently in March 2004, spending two-years at Easter Road, with a move to Celtic in June 2006 next on the agenda.
During his four-years in Glasgow, Caldwell racked up 106 appearances at the Bhoys, and won two Premiership titles.
Caldwell moved to Wigan Athletic in January 2010, and in a fruitful stint in the North West, the ex-Scotland international was awarded the Latics Player of the Year in 2011/12, before helping them to an FA Cup triumph in 2013.
After 102 appearances in the Blue and White of Wigan – and having already taken up a coaching role at the club - he hung up his boots in February and subsequently took up his first role in management on 7th April.
Welsh international midfielder Emyr Huws is likely to be the man that Wigan will look towards next term, as they aim for promotion at the first attempt.
Born in Llanelli, the 21-year-old played in the youth teams of Swansea City and Manchester City – turning professional for the latter in 2012.
A regular in the Development squad at Eastlands, Huws was sent out on loan to Northampton Town during the 2012/13 campaign, turning out ten times for the Cobblers.
Huws was then loaned out to Birmingham City in January 2014, and enjoyed a successful stay at St Andrews – helping the Blues to Championship survival with two goals in 17 outings.
In July 2014, Huws joined Wigan Athletic on a six-month loan deal – making the move permanent for £3m on transfer deadline-day.
Injuries restricted him to just eleven appearances in Wigan’s relegation campaign.
