The Cod Army defeated the Iron at Highbury this afternoon

Steven Pressley paid tribute to groundsman Dale Frith and his staff for getting today’s game against the Iron on as the Cod Army picked up three big points.

Heavy rain on the Fylde Coast all morning meant the game was potentially in doubt, however Frith and his team worked tirelessly to get the fixture ahead.

First half goals from Ash Hunter and Bobby Grant proved the difference despite Paddy Madden netted a penalty in the second period.

The win moved Fleetwood out of the Sky Bet League One relegation zone, and sets them up nicely for away games at Rochdale and Coventry on Tuesday and Saturday respectively.

He said: “A big thank you first and foremost must go to Dale Frith the groundsman and his staff because it looked very much like the game was going to be off at 12pm.

“We thought as staff that there was every chance as staff it could get called off, but persistence and a lot of hard work got the game ahead and thankfully so.

“We wouldn’t be standing here with a win on a Saturday evening without that effort, so a big thank you to him and I was really pleased with the players.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half and controlled it for long periods. In the second half we were relatively comfortably until the penalty.

“It gave them a little bit of impetus and made us nervous and got penned back for long periods. We still had a couple of really good moments on the counter attack though.

“I said to them at half time that the only thing that would stop us from winning the game today would be our desire and mentality to see the job through.

“Nothing else would have seen that through apart from desire. They showed that in the second half and I’m delighted with them.

“They made a little tactical change in the second half which gave us a few problems, but we still looked a real threat on the counter even at 2-0.

“The most important thing today was that we won the game and found a way to win. That’s the most pleasing aspect for me.”
