MacFarlane has joined Steven Pressley at Highbury
Neil MacFarlane has joined Steven Pressley at Fleetwood Town Football Club.The 37-year-old links up with the Cod Army having enjoyed a prolonged playing career in his native Scotland.
MacFarlane started his senior playing career with Queens Park in 1999, spending a solitary season at Hampden Park as he helped them to the third division title, before completing a move to Kilmarnock.
Loans spells away from Rugby Park with Clyde and a return to Queens Park followed for the defender, with a permanent transfer to Airdrieonians materialising in 2001, where he would feature 28 times in one season with the club.
MacFarlane signed for Premiership side Hearts in July 2002, and the Dunoon-born defender would go on to spend a further four-years at Tynecastle, making 73 appearances for the Edinburgh outfit.
After leaving Hearts in 2006, McFarlane spent time with Aberdeen and Gretna, before signing for Queen of the South in 2007.
He was part of the Queen of the South squad which finished runners-up to Glasgow Rangers in the final of the Scottish Cup in 2008.
In his two-seasons in Dumfries, MacFarlane became a key member of the side, making 61 appearances for Queen of the South over that period.
Later in his career, MacFarlane played for Greenock Morton and Airdrie United, ending his career with Annan Athletic in 2011.
Following on from his retirement, MacFarlane was appointed as a first-team coach at Falkirk, remaining at the side until March 2013 before he moved down south with Pressley to take up the position of assistant manager at League
One side Coventry City.
Earlier this year, MacFarlane was put in temporary charge of the Sky Blues following Pressley’s departure from the Ricoh Arena.
