Town began the month with a win over Gillingham

Fleetwood began March with a win over Gillingham on a wet Tuesday evening as first half goals from Wes Burns and Shola Ameobi were enough for victory.

Burns scored his second goal in as many games with a strike straight from a corner which found the front post after just three minutes.

Shola Ameobi then opened his Fleetwood account on nine minutes with a well taken goal, before Luke Norris’ drive reduced the deficit.

Town very nearly made it three wins on the trot against Sheffield United in their next game, but Che Adams’ stoppage time penalty denied them maximum points.

The Blades opened the scoring on the half hour mark when Matt Done’s strike deflected cruelly off defender Marcus Nilsson and past Chris Maxwell.

The lead didn’t last long however as Ash Hunter equalised two minutes later with an expert header which flew into the top corner.

Nilsson then turned the hero as he put his side in front on the hour mark with a glancing header which found the far corner.

Youngster Nick Haughton was then sent off for two yellow cards, before Adams netted after Matt Flynn was fouled in the box.

Mark Duffy was the man of the match for Burton Albion as they ended Town’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 win at the Pirelli Stadium.

The Brewers broke the deadlock through Duffy’s smart finish before Burns continued his good run of form in front of goal with a close range effort.

Nigel Clough’s men continued to pressure the Cod Army’s backline, and Duffy curled a strike from outside of the box for his seventh goal of the season.

Walsall were next up at Highbury, and in a tight game the impressive Tom Bradshaw hammered home from inside the box to earn his side all three points.

Town were beaten again in their next fixture as they welcomed Play-Off hopefuls Barnsley to Highbury.

An unfortunate own goal from Joe Davis gave the Tykes the lead early in the second half, before Josh Scowen made sure of the result late on.

Fleetwood picked up a vital point in the final game of the month when they visited Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium.

In a game of few chances, striker Lee Novak missed a brilliant opportunity to win the game late on for the Spireites when he headed a cross over the bar from a good position.
