Grant opened the scoring with a stunning 30 yard strike which flew past Dan Bentley, before the Shrimpers turned the game on its head through goals from Adam Barrett and Jack Payne.
McLaughlin however had the last laugh as he burst towards the back post to meet Amari’i Bell’s perfect cross.
Next up at Highbury were Oldham Athletic, and it was to be a cagey affair which ended with both teams picking up a point.
On loan midfielder Stefan Scougall scored the game’s opener in the second half as he scooped the ball over keeper Joel Coleman.
Liam Kelly, who has a goal disallowed shortly after Scougall’s goal, did eventually get on the scoresheet as he bundled home from close range.
