Nicholson enjoyed a fine first season with the development squad

Development Squad manager Barry Nicholson recently took part on the UEFA A licence coaching course in Scotland.

Nicholson, who enjoyed a fine first season in management with Town’s development squad, was pleased with the way the course went for him.

The former Cod Army midfielder further developed his coaching skills as he continues to work his way up the ladder.

He said: “I’ve recently been on the UEFA A licence course and it’s the next one I’ve got to do having passed the B licence and the UEFA Youth A licence.

“The youth one is on par with the adult one now, but obviously I needed to get it done too to progress further.

“I was up in Scotland for nine days doing the course with the SFA and it was really good. There were lots of bodies on it including players and non-players.

“I was probably one of the younger coaches on the course as there were people there who were far more experienced than me.

“I need to have these qualifications for the job I’m in now with Fleetwood, so I’m just glad I’ve managed to get it done as quickly as I could.

“We’ve all got a few assignments to do now over the next few months as well as coaching practice, so there’s plenty of hard work to come.

“I enjoy what I do, I really do. The manager gives me the freedom to set up the team the way I want it and I’m getting a great insight into coaching.

“I’ve done my previous badges with the Scottish FA and that’s why I’m doing it up there with them instead of the English FA.

“What I will say with the Scottish FA is there’s no right or wrong, you have free reign to coach the way you want to do so.

“Of course you’ve got to go through a certain structure but there’s loads of different styles that we all use.

“I’ve certainly got a different style to others, and it was a really comfortable environment to be in as we pushed ourselves as hard as we could.”
