Defender focused on gaining regular starting spot

With only a week until the start of pre-season training, Town left back Danny Andrew is raring to go ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

Signed from Macclesfield Town last summer, Andrew’s first season in the red and white of Fleetwood was marred by injury.

However, the former Cheltenham Town man is now hoping to make the left back berth his own during the Cod Army’s second season in the third tier.

He said: “I’m looking forward to getting back into training. By the time we get back it will have been more or less two months and you start to miss it.

“You can’t wait for the grind of pre-season but I’m definitely looking forward to getting back and seeing all the boys and working hard.

“We got given a programme to work off through the two months, so obviously I’ve been working on that and have just started to do some more intense work.”

Graham Alexander and his players will train at Poolfoot Farm for the first time next week, and Andrew believes a place to call their own will benefit the squad.

“It’ll be good to have a training base where you can work from and have got everything there that you need.

“I haven’t actually been down to see it recently but from the plans it looks like it’s going to be a top class set-up, so I’m looking forward to seeing that next week.”

Town head to Germany in mid July for a week’s pre-season training - a change from Austria where they have visited for the past few seasons.

“If Austria was anything to go by then Germany is going to be tough. It’ll be good to get a little break from England though as that is what we’ll need.

“It’ll be intense over there but it’ll be a different scenery for us which will be good as it’ll break things up a little bit.

“We can’t really complain about any of the pre-season games we’ve got this year. There’s some class teams in there.

“Getafe and Borrusia Dortmund B will be very good, so too Burnley who have just been relegated from the Premier League.

“They’re all really tough fixtures which will get us prepared for what will be a tough campaign, but hopefully it’ll be a good one for us.”

Andrew’s focus is now solely on securing a regular place in the manager’s team, and admits his injury worries are now behind him.

“I had an injury hit season last year and had a bad start to the campaign after pulling my thigh muscle in pre-season.

“It’s never good to get injured in pre-season but I've done a lot of rehab work since then. I pulled my medial during the season so that set me back again.

“I’ve forgotten about them now and have done all my rehab now and am feeling strong and fit. It’s all about looking ahead and hopefully making that left back position mine.”
