Mamadou Djabi and Michael Tetteh netted for Town

Nathan Rooney’s Fleetwood Town youth side were victorious on Saturday morning as they defeated Carlisle United on a wet and windy day at Lytham Cricket Club.

Goals in either half from Mamadou Djabi and Michael Tetteh ultimately decided the encounter, with Town’s youngsters picking up their first maximum points of the calendar year.

In an even start to proceedings on the Fylde Coast, it would be Carlisle who created the opening effort on goal, however Elliot Wynne was equal to Holt’s long-range shot.

Louis Myers went close for Fleetwood shortly after, the striker firstly saw his attempt ricochet off a defender before shooting into the side netting at the back post.

The hosts went ahead when Djabi profited from a defensive mix-up to go one on one with goalkeeper Morgan Bacon, and made no mistake as he rolled the ball into the back of the net.

Tetteh then tried his luck from a free-kick after Tre Sterling had been fouled, though the former could only divert his kick over the crossbar from 20 yards out.

Carlisle were soon back level, much to the frustration of the Codlings, as midfielder Michael Quigley equalised eight minutes after Town had opened the scoring.

Quigley reacted first to a loose ball before taking a composed touch and arrowing an unstoppable shot beyond the dive of a full-stretched Wynne.

Tetteh restored the advantage just four minutes after the interval, when he made a surging run into the box to tap the ball into an empty net.

Fleetwood were unfortunate not to add a third when Andy Smith’s downward header was fumbled by the goalkeeper, but the visitors managed to clear.

At the other end, Wynne was alert to smartly get down low to keep out skipper Matthew Douglas’ dipping free-kick as Carlisle pushed for a second goal.

But it would be Town’s day in the end as Rooney’s side saw out the win ahead of their next game against Bury on 13th February.
