Town were cruelly beaten on penalties by the Tykes

Steven Pressley admitted that Barnsley deserved their win over the course of the 90 minutes as the Cod Army were beaten on penalties this evening.

After clawing their way back into the contest through Ash Hunter’s equaliser with ten minutes to play, it wasn’t to be as the Tykes succeeded 4-2 from spot kicks.

Pressley now wants his side to channel their disappointment into a positive as they prepare to welcome Shrewsbury to the Fylde Coast on Sunday afternoon.

He said: “Over the course of the 90 minutes the better team won. It was a night where we didn’t play to the levels that we had over the past couple of months.

“We still managed to find a way though and showed a resilience and an endeavour. We also showed real energy as a team to get back into the game.

“In recent weeks we’ve played really well and not quite managed to get the result. Tonight we didn’t play so well and I thought it was going to be our night.

“It was a very cruel way to go out but that’s football. We know the nature of it and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to pick each other up.

“We’ve got a huge game to come on Sunday and we have to ensure we go into that one with a positive frame of mind and win the game.

“We have to direct this hurt into a positive but we’ve also got to make sure we don’t lose games like we did tonight. We have to have the right mentality.

“We’ve got 19 league games remaining and have games in hand over other teams, but we have to ensure that we win those games.”
